Could this have been a worm/rootkit?

Hello and :)

2 days ago I was watching a video on YouTube, (

) and after reading a comment that said

Hahaha i got infected by one and it deletes the Windows folder after the restart[and i think it was a little one not a full destroyer]...and? it deletes any OS based on NT because i got this error after infect: NTLDR not found.... PRESS CTRL+ALT+DEL To restart....and NTLDR comes from NT loader....so be aware it ussually comes with a program on the net ... i mean like "Y Mess see invisible people"...so be aware because it can't be so easily detected"

It kinda reminded me of how 3 years ago, I didn't know much about anti-viruses at all and not much about pc's. I also had a sucky anti-virus from ROGERS and spybot (really bad protection because ROGERS anti-virus sucks big time) I kept on getting some weird loading errors with a game I played and then I contacted a Admin from the game and he said you might have some errors on your pc and some other things... He told me to do a speed test on I think "http://speedtest.net/" and "http://pingtest.net/" after testing my speed I saw some ad from Uniblue showing a product from them that fixes errors and so I downloaded the free version which only removes 15 errors and when I scanned I had around 1,000 errors! So I removed 15 errors and it said to remove all of them I must get the full version. I did NOT purchase it I just uninstalled it. Later I scanned with SpyBot and it found a couple of things and then I removed them. After I restarting the pc and I got some weird error saying something like (Cannot found..... press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart) and that message was really familiar to the one on YouTube. My brother tried to fix it but everytime you restart you would get that same message. My dad went to the pc shop and they said something about your harddrive and they can't recover the files. I'm not exactly sure what they said the problem was but for sure they didn't say anything about malware doing this to your system. So what's the problem? Was it really Uniblue that did this to my system? Or was it Malware that did this since my ROGERS anti-virus sucked? And BTW, I am sure that I downloaded a program from Uniblue and it was not a fake Uniblue. My brother thought that it happened because of what I downloaded. (UNIBLUE)

P.S. watch this video and read the comments.

Hi,

I'm sorry for the late response.

It's impossible to tell what caused the problem without more information. We can only guess now.

Yes, it could have been Uniblue. Registry Cleaners can cause serious problems. This is an article about the dangers of registry cleaners: http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/02/reg...weaking_13.html.

Yes, it could have been malware. Malware could have damaged a system file that's necessary for booting Windows, or you antivirus could have deleted an infected system file that's necessary for booting Windows.

Or it could have been something completely else... It's simply impossible to tell what caused it without more information. :)

aww man... i wish i could remember more, but that was around 2-3 years ago. These day's I hardly even use or trust registry cleaners. If I'm actually gonna use a registry cleaner I will maybe only use CCleaner. My anti-virus I think is the worst anti-virus out there since it's from rogers. and they are not trying to improve there anti-virus. its because there basically a Cable,TV, and home phone company. My anti-virus usually could hardly even remove or detect threats. When I scanned with spybot after using uniblue, it just found 3 or 4 things and i think 1 or 2 required a restart, so i restarted and it was saying something about it "cannot find ( i forgot) press CTRL+ALT+DEL". my brother tried everything even checking bios but the pc gave the same error after each restart. :) that time my brother got soo pissed off at me so now i know to not download things from ads and get a better anti-virus and learn more about computers and anti-viruses... but thanks for replying! :)
