This new post is in response to my earlier one about suspecting that my pc may be infected, however neither my McAfee nor Malwarebytes detects anything. However, in following the steps to download/run a new Malware, then run Defogger-Disable, then run DDS, and then run GMER - everything went well until I tried GMER. The first attempt locked the pc and not even the clock would keep time. I rebooted and then tried to run it again. This time I got into the "scan" step, but during the scan (after about 20 seconds) the pc stopped responding. I could stll move the cursor around the screen, but could not click on anything. The small round blue/green circle kept running; this time the clock continued to keep time. After five minutes of the GMER box staying white - but translucent, I rebooted the pc and am now posting this new post as requested, and attaching the two DDS txt files, and last Malwarebytes scan log. Please let me know what is next step.

Thanks.

Don

Hi,

Next, please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

  1. Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  2. Click Start
  3. When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  4. Click Start
  5. Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  6. Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
  7. Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  8. Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Next, download my Security Check from here or here.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Let me know how things are running now and what issues remain.

Also, I had a video card failure two weeks ago and have just received a "refurbished card" and need to replace the temp card. there are some differences between the temp and the final card so I want to make sure with you that it is safe to do this now, or should I wait till you are finished with my pc?

Please wait until we are done before making any hardware changes.

Navigate to Start --> Run, and type Combofix /uninstall in the box that appears. Click OK afterward. Notice the space between the X and the /uninstall

This uninstalls all of ComboFix's components.

Delete SecurityCheck.

Next, click Start and type in Windows Update. Click Windows Update when it appears. Download and install all available updates including Service Pack 2. Ensure that all security programs are disabled first.

After that, restart your computer and let me know what issues remain.

Chris:

OK, everything seems to be working correctly.

Can you help me understand what was going on with my problem? I am still unclear what caused my restore points to disappear, and the pc to lock up.

Thanks very much for your help!

Well ComboFix removed all old Restore Points and created a fresh one.

The lock ups could be a myriad of different things, ranging from hardware issues to insufficient resources to any number of things. Locking up is too vague a symptom to pin down so easily.

If you want, we can look a little deeper and see if there are any performance issues going on. If so:

Next, please run the PCPitstop Full Tests here. When the tests are complete, a results page will pop up. Copy and paste the URL of the Results screen and post it here for me.
