Java Question

I really don't need help just need a question answered.

I have a laptop that I never have installed Java on. I don't mind not being able to use some websites because everything I use daily doesn't need it. However, the reason for this was I though maybe it would reduce the risk of Malware from Java Exploits as I've noticed a good sign of infection upon visiting a site is the Java Icon appearing in the system tray when not expecting it. Am I really reducing the risk or do these Java Exploits run differently?

I assume that if you don't have the Java Runtime Environment installed on your computer, you can't be exploited by malicious Java applets.

And I personally hate viewing websites that like to have a Java applet that could have easily been written in AJAX or Flash.

In my uninstall list no Java RE in there... the computer didn't come with a version of java on it and I've ran JavaRa to verify this. And I agree. The only use for Java I would have is Facebook Photo Uploader and even then when I need to I click the revert to old method or whatever it is where you simply browse the files on your computer because I never upload a lot of pictures at once...
