Infected with Security Master AV

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was infected with Security Master AV and used the removal instructions at

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-remo...urity-master-av

&

http://www.removevirus.org/remove-security-master-av.html

still had problems with browsers being redirected to http://find.seekbasic.com/addrSearch.do

&

http://findgala.com/?&uid=2129&q=eset

so I used avg removal software and was able to get rid of the nonfunctioning avg and install eset antivirus 4 free trial. I ran the standard scan & found 29 infections. They were removed successfully.

I installed MBRT & booted into safe mode, ran scan & found 900 infections & tracking cookies. I was able to remove them successfully.

I tried firefox to search google and it was working normally. I tried to go to microsoft update and got a message that Eset blocked to site and a long url that ended with 78.47.249.228:80.

I did a google search and found this website and this article

http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?s...mp;#entry284711

&

http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?s...rt=#entry283326

which match the problem I'm having.

I followed the Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help and followed these steps

Step 1

uninstall the following applications:

1. Adobe Reader 9.3

Step 2

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

Then run JavaRa to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

* Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.

* From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.

* JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.

* Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.

* A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply

Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.

C:\Program Files\Java

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java

C:\Windows\Sun

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

Step 3

* Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

* Go to "Update" tab and select "Check for Updates". If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.

* Go to "Scanner" tab and select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.

* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.

* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)

* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

* Copy&Paste the entire report in your post.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

In my post include these log(s):

1. JavaRa log

2. MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware log

3. a DDS log

4. a GMER log

Hello Mike65

Welcome to Malwarebytes.

=====================

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan or rootkit.

This type of infection has the capabilities to allows hacker to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identity Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you still want to clean it please do the following

===================

Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.

  • Right click on the file and choose extract all extract the file to your desktop then run it.
  • If prompted to restart the computer type in Y then it will restart.
  • Or if you are prompted with a hidden service warning do go ahead and delete it.
  • Once completed it will create a log in your C:\ drive
  • Please post the contents of that log

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Thank you for helping me!

I agree that the best solution is to reinstall the OS. This is a second hand laptop and I don't have the restore cd's or I would restore it. I have never used it at any financial institutions, just to surf the web and read email, which I will change the password on asap. I followed your instructions and after reboot, it has found and installed windows updates which were blocked before. I will investigate whether the browser is working correctly in a few. Here is the logs you requested.

Thanks again!

Everything seems to be working correctly, now I'm going to lock it down with steadystate so the idiots who keep getting viruses can't change anything. See how they like me now!

Now to do the same thing on the two other computers they got infected.

=======Cleanup

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the Uninstall, it needs to be there.

Delete\uninstall anything else that we have used that is leftover.

After that your all set.

The following are some articles and a Windows Update link that I like to suggest to people to prevent malware and general PC maintenance.

Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

Prevention article To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections please read the Prevention artice by Miekiemoes.
