MB Getting Stuck in Safe Mode - Antivirus Pro (Virus)

My wife's laptop has Antivirus Pro (virus) - I am attempting to boot in safe mode, run malwarebytes, then change the proxy settings in IE; this is the solution that I have read multiple times on several forums. However, I cannot get passed the first phase of this fix because MB gets stuck while doing a scan in Safe Mode (both full and quick scan). It gets to certain files (not the same one each time) and then it just stops... clicking anywhere on the screen gives you an endless hourglass. and i'm forced to shutdown.

This is a PC, XP machine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated since any of the fixes not involving safe mode have not worked.
