Malwarebytes program shuts down

Recommended Posts

I have been unable to install Windows Updates. Error 80070490. After reading numerous forums & trying several repairs etc. with no luck, I found Malwarebytes.

Downloaded free version & started scan. After scanning 312911 objects & about 1 1/2 hrs, Windows said the program had stopped working & would be shut down. Tried again, same thing. The file the scan had stopped at was Internet Explorer. I have Vista Home Premium, service pack 2, 32-bit Operating System. Hope I have placed this in the right place & that you can help me!

Many Thanks.

Clear Temp Files Using ATF Cleaner:

  • Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from here and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close all open internet browser windows
  • Run ATF Cleaner by double clicking it.
  • Once the program opens, click the box next to Select All
    • Note: this will delete all cookies saved by sites that you have visited so if you need to keep any cookies for automatic logins etc then uncheck the Cookies option

[*]Once that's all set click on the Empty Selected button and it will remove the temporary files from your system.

[*]If you use Firefox or Opera browsers then click the appropriate button at the top of the program and delete the temp files from them as well following the same procedure.

Once that's done you may delete ATF Cleaner then do the following:

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.

  • Close all open internet browser windows
  • Double click on the ccsetup file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then click Next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click Next to use the default install location. Click Install then click Finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the Windows tab, under Internet Explorer, uncheck Cookies if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit)
  • If you use Firefox or any other Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for Cookies is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the Options icon at the left side of the window, then click on Advanced.
uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 24 hours.
  • Click on the Cleaner icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the Registry feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items for removal, which can cause issues with other programs.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

After you have completed the steps above, run another Quick Scan and see if it completes....

Thanks :)

Thanks for the update, if you still need help don't hesitate to ask.

Hi Firefox,

Well i have reinstalled Windows etc. Ran a malwarebytes scan & received the same message;

"Microsoft Windows. Malwaresbytes has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly, Windows will close the program & notify you if a solution is available."

When i reinstalled all the old files where saved to "old" & that is where the program stopped again!

C:\Windows.old\Users\David\app Data\Roaming\Micrsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\Window Switcher.Ink

Now do I still do the repair you suggested, or do I do something else instead?

Many Thanks for your help.

Beth

If you are infected and/or keep getting infected see below:

Please read the following so that you can begin the cleaning process:

As we don't deal with malware removal in the General Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forum, you need to start a topic in the Malware Removal forum so a qualified helper can help you fix any malware related problems/infections you may have.

  • Please read and follow the directions here, skipping any steps you are unable to complete. Then post a NEW topic here.
  • After posting your new post, make sure under options, you select Track this topic and choose Immediate Email Notification, so that you're alerted when someone has replied to your post.
  • One of the expert helpers there will give you one-on-one assistance when one becomes available.
  • Please refrain from making any further changes to your computer (Install/Uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc...) unless advised by a malware removal helper. Doing so can result in system changes which may hinder the attempts by a helper to clean your machine.

NOTE: Please DO NOT post back to (bump) your topic within the first 48 hours.

Replying to your own posts changes the post count and helpers are looking for topics with zero replies. If you reply to your own post helpers may think that you're already being helped and thus overlook your post.

    • If there is no reply from any experts after 48 hours, you can reply to the topic, asking for help again.
      Or
    • You may send a Private Message to a Moderator asking for assistance.

Alternatively, as a paying customer, you can contact the help desk at support@malwarebytes.org or here.

Please be patient, someone will assist you as soon as it is possible.

PS: Please use the "ADDREPLY" t_reply.gif button instead of other ones when you start replying. :)
