search.conduit hijacker problem

Recommended Posts

I have a hijacker on my computer, and I need help getting it removed.

While on computer using IE or Mozilla Firefox, I get redirected to "advertisement" sites OR a supposed google site called "Pagerage."

The link below is the most common of re-directions:

http://search.conduit.com/ResultsExt.aspx?...yers.yontoo.com

I know nothing about this site, nor have I ever visited it (willingly).

It says it's powered by Google.

Someone mentioned to me that she checked out SEARCH.CONDUIT (which is included in the link above) and that it is some form of hijacker.

My computer has all the symptoms of an attack by search.conduit

I ran AVAST virus scan (which found nothing), and then I ran MALWAREBYTES ANTI-MALWARE (which nothing showed).

I have Hijackthis on my computer, but I don't know how to read the logs to know what to remove and what not to remove.

Would you please take a look?

Hugs,

Barb :)

Someone in another forum advised me I would need a program called COMBOFIX to get rid of what they believe my problem to be called, "Google Redirect Virus".

After downloading COMBOFIX, before running it, I found another website that warned NOT to use it. That it was for technically trained people, not for the common public, because if used incorrectly it could damage your computer.

SO, I closed the program and I will not use it as I am not a professional.

Still, can you offer me help on how to remove this problem?

Hello Barb711

Welcome to Malwarebytes.

Do you have a pagerage toolbar installed or Conduit products installed possibly anything from Foxit?

If so these are the reasons for the redirects.

Uninstalling either one of those toolbars should remove it.

But I will check for any malware by doing the following scans.

=====================

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on OTL to run it.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Under Custom scan's and fixes section paste in the below in bold

    netsvcs

    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*

    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles

    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles

    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav

    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90

    %systemroot%\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\*.dll

  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

====================

Download the following GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here

  • Download the randomly named EXE file to your Desktop. Remember what its name is since it is randomly named.
  • Double click on the new random named exe file you downloaded and run it. If prompted about the Security Warning and Unknown Publisher go ahead and click on Run
  • It may take a minute to load and become available.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED

  • IAT/EAT

  • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically only C:\ should be checked)

  • Show All (don't miss this one)

  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop
  • **Caution** Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
  • Click OK and quit the GMER program.
  • Note: On Firefox you need to go to Tools/Options/Main then under the Downloads section, click on Always ask me where to save files so that you can choose the name and where to save to, in this case your Desktop.
  • Post that log in your next reply.

Sorry, I had a bit of trouble replying.

I want to thank you for helping me :)

I did have the pagerage toolbar on my computer, but I removed it before I joined this forum. The problem was still around even after I had removed it.

I downloaded both the OTL and GMER Rootkit Scanner. The OTL scan results are below; however, I couldn't get the GMER Rootkit Scanner to work. I tried 3 different times. Sorry :(

Run OTL

  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    :OTL
FF - prefs.js..browser.search.defaultthis.engineName: "PageRage Customized Web Search"
    FF - prefs.js..browser.search.defaulturl: "http://search.conduit.com/ResultsExt.aspx?ctid=CT2418376&SearchSource=3&q={searchTerms}"
FF - prefs.js..browser.search.selectedEngine: "PageRage Customized Web Search"
    FF - prefs.js..keyword.URL: "http://search.conduit.com/ResultsExt.aspx?ctid=CT2418376&q="
    O30 - LSA: Authentication Packages - (C:\WINDOWS\system32\efcBqoPi) - File not found
    :Commands
    [emptytemp]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot when it is done
  • It will produce a log for you on reboot, please post that log in your next reply.

===========

It should be gone after doing the above.

  • Double click on OTL to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window. OTL.Txt a This is saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of this file and post it with your next reply.

Registry entries deleted on Reboot...

I would also like to ask, why does my computer take so long to load?

I have to wait 20 minutes or more before I can even open a browser.

This has been going on for a while now, even before this hijacker problem.

{my apologies if I wasn't suppose to ask this in this post}

Hi it could be a failing hard drive not enough memory anything.

At this point I don't know.

The way you are running OTL is not correct you are supposed to run the script I gave you once.

The second time it is supposed to be a scan only.

Please do the following:

  • Double click on OTL to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window. OTL.Txt a This is saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of this file and post it with your next reply.

Below are the results of the last scan you asked for.

Thought I'd let you know that I haven't had any more re-directions while

on internet. Not since you had me run OTL with the first code you gave to

me. My computer seems to be running pretty good now, except for when

it first starts up....which you already explained it could be a failing hard drive.

But anyways, below is the scan I ran:

Great your log is free of spyware.

If you want I can attempt to have you check the hard drive.

You will need to know the manufacturer's name of the hard drive you have installed.

To get that go to Start then right click on the C:\drive and choose properties.

Then click on the hardware tab.

Then you can write down what you see there under Disk Drives and post that info here for me to see then I will be able to help you further.

It's not on the internet that is slow.

It is when I push the button on my computer to turn it on, and as it is loading windows

and all that (loading up the desktop stuff, zone alarm, avast antivirus, etc.). If I'm lucky

I can get it loaded in 15 minutes; but it is usually 20-30 minutes to load before I can even

open programs or folders.

I wonder if I have too many programs loading when the computer first starts up.

Programs that don't need to be loaded until the are used.

You have a few running that can be disabled.

Mainly I think you need to add some more memory as yo currently are running 512Mb of memory.

hjt_logo.gifClick here to download HJTInstall.exe

  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Not much to disable this will only help minimally

Adding memory would help the most.

Please re-open Hijackthis and click on "Do a system scan only"

Then place a check mark next to these entries below:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sunKistEM] C:\Program Files\Digital Media Reader\shwiconem.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iPInSightLAN 02] "C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPClient.exe" -l

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe

Now click on Fix Checked and then close Hijackthis.

Other than that let me know of any remaining issues.

  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
