The path to the install is C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware not C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

Also, no rules.ref file is found there either.

I can that it looks like you are using windows XP if that is correct, then:

You are correct, the install path is C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

But the rules files is located at:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

NOTE: if you copy the entire path above and past it to the Run command from the start menu it will open the folder (even if it is hidden).

The reason for the rules files being there is cause that file is shared by all users on the computer.....

It really looks like either your provider is blocking this or your firewall. Are you sure you do not have any other security software running on this computer, firewalls, anti-virus software.

Can you surf the internet using IE?

From a dos prompt can you ping what is in the code box below and get a reply?

Please complete the steps from Firefox first -

Then check your internet using this method - There is an internet error somewhere - Were you recently infected with anything ??

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Note: It MUST be Internet Explorer, not Firefox, Opera, Chrome or any other internet browser
  • Click on Tools at the top and select Internet Options
  • Note: If you do not see Tools, press the Alt key on your keyboard and it will show up
  • Click on the Connections tab
  • Click on the LAN settings button
  • Under Automatic configuration make sure that the box next to Automatically detect settings is checked, if it is not, then click the box next to it to check it
  • Click on the OK button to close the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window
  • Click on the OK button to close the Internet Options window
  • Use this diagram as a guide
  • Try updating Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware again and if it does not work then please proceed to Step 02

Next run a CheckDisk scan with this code - Copy and paste into Run Box , close all open programs , then click OK to let it run -

The computer will restart and run a full 5 stage check - This can take from 30-60 mins depending on your system -

It should report and repair any faults on your hard drive -

CMD /C ECHO Y|CHKDSK C: /R | SHUTDOWN /R /T 30

Thank You -

EDIT -

FYI - Current update is Version 4320 - So you have not updated for about 2 1/2 months -
