My log 07-16 Thanks for looking

Recommended Posts

I hope I did this correctly. I have a reboot loop on my computer that was infected. It is now connected to the computer the logs came from via external usb adapter. When I did the gmer step I didn't check the L/: drive where the external is...only my C/: drive. I mention this b/c the external is where my trouble is. I think I did the steps as suggested.

Thank you for helping.

Cecilia

Hello Cecilia! Welcome to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forums!

My name is Borislav and I will be glad to help you solve your problems with malware. Before we begin, please note the following:

  • The process of cleaning your system may take some time, so please be patient.
  • Follow my instructions step by step if there is a problem somewhere, stop and tell me.
  • Stay with the thread until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
  • Instructions that I give are for your system only!
  • If you don't know or can't understand something please ask.
  • Do not install or uninstall any software or hardware, while work on.
  • Keep me informed about any changes.

Step 1

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply
Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.
    C:\Program Files\Java
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java
    C:\Windows\Sun
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

Step 2

I also see you have Viewpoint installed...

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player

Step 3

**Note: If you need more detailed information, please visit the web page of ComboFix in BleepingComputer. **

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper.

Please download ComboFix from

Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Open Tools -> Options -> Main tab
    • Set to Always ask me where to Save the files.

[*]During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

CF_download_FF.gif

CF_download_rename.gif

[*]It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.

[*]Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

[*]Close any open browsers.

[*]Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

-----------------------------------------------------------

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[*]Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it will produce a report for you.

[*]Please post the C:\Combo-Fix.txt for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

  1. JavaRa log
  2. ComboFix log

Hello and thank you for your help Borislav. I am ready to do the steps. However, I just want to mention that since my computer won't load I am doing this all by USB adapter and my "bad" hard drive is connected externally.

Since we are doing things that affect the "clean" computer I just want to make sure it is a) safe and b)will target my external drive.

Thanks! :)

Please try downloading and burning the following from another computer.

Avira AntiVir Rescue System

  • Download the
    Avira AntiVir Rescue System
    from

  • Place a blank CD in your burner and double-click on the downloaded file named
    rescue_system-common-en.exe

  • The program will automatically burn the CD for you.

  • Place the burned CD into the affected computer and start the computer from this CD.

  • On the bottom left side of the screen there are 2 flags. Using your mouse click on the British flag to use English.

  • Click on the
    Configuration
    button.

    • Select

    • Select
      Scan for joke programs (Jokes)

    • Select
      Scan for games

    [*]
    Click on
    Virus scanner

    [*]
    Click on
    Start scanner
at the bottom of the screen

    [*]

The Avira AntiVir Rescue System is a Linux-based application that allows accessing computers that cannot be booted anymore and is updated several times a day so that the most recent security updates are always available.

Possible solutions to Screen Resolution and other issues

  1. Please see the post
if you're unable to view the entire screen of Avira.

  2. You can also review this one

  3. Currently only the German keyboard is supported.
    English keyboards require work arounds.

  4. Some computers attempt to mount the floppy even though they don't have one. You may need to go in to the BIOS and disable the floppy drive in order to mount your hard drive for scanning.

This is crazy. I downloaded avira and created a cd put it in the infected computer--it sounds like it is going through the loading process but the screen went black after going through the booting process and restarting and there is only a white line flashing in the left corner of my screen. The screen is blank with the flashing line whether the cd is in or out.

What did I do?

The best action is to re-install your Windows.

Are you sure that you want to continue?

[/quote

I guess I am done here since it it is not a virus problem. I need the computer for my children so I do want to continue with your suggestions.

Thank you for all your help.

It's very serious problem so that it what we suggest you. As you wish...

First

Please download ISOBurner, which will allow you to burn the OTLPE ISO image to a CD and make it bootable. Just download and install the program and follow all the default questions.

Second

Download the OTLPE.iso to your computer and burn it to the CD using ISOBurner. Information on how to burn an ISO image using ISOBurner can be found here.

NOTE: This file is 292Mb in size so it may take some time to download.

When the file has finished downloading, double-click on it and ISOBurner will automatically open and prompt you to burn the ISO image to a CD.

Save the following text to your USB stick as scan.txt. It must be named this, or the automated scan won't work.

Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
