UAC prompt when starting Malwarebytes on Windows 7

Recommended Posts

I installed Malwarebytes free edition (v1.46) on Windows 7 (fresh download). No scans have been run yet. When I start Malwarebytes I get an UAC prompt every time. I did not change any UAC or MalwareBytes settings; all is in default installation state. mbamgui.exe does not have "Run as Administrator" checked in compatibility settings. I do not have this problem on other Windows 7 machines. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi mbuser -

First start with a clean copy of the program - Follow these directions to clean all traces of the old versions first -

As you are using the free version , just ignore the sections about reinstalling your license -

To Fully Remove and Reinstall a Fresh New Copy of Malwarebytes - Read Carefully

Windows Vista and Windows 7:

  • Click on the Start button and select Control Panel
  • Click on Programs and Features
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important !
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here

It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so, very important

After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here

Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version only

Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.

Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now reset any file exclusions as may be required in your

Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications.

You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask me and I'll explain how to do it.

Thank You - :)

EDIT -

If you still have a problem with a clean copy then we look at the reasons -

Thanks for your reply

[*] Uninstalled Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware using Programs and Features

[*] Restarted computer

[*] Downloaded and run mbam-clean.exe

[*] Restarted computer

[*] Downloaded and installed the latest version

Still every time I launch Malwarebytes (Desktop icon or Start menu) I receive the UAC prompt "Do you want to allow the following program make changes to this computer...".

mbam.exe (the scanner) is supposed to give you a UAC prompt when you run it

At program launch? I do not have this on other Vista or 7 machines.

Yes it is, the only time it does not is if UAC is turned off or you are logged into a Limited or Standard user account, in which case you will find the "Check for Updates" button greyed out and unclickable, in which case you can right-click on it and select "Run as administrator" to be able to use that feature.

Ah! I see. OK, this resolves my query. Thanks for your replies and the excellent software.
