Hi,

For the past week since my PC was infected with "Anti Malware Doctor", I've been finding that some google search results get redirected and that Firefox randomly launches new windows taking me to websites I don't want to visit. Also Chrome stopped working completely so I've uninstalled that.

Below I'm posting my Combofix logs if someone could please take a look and advise? The only thing which I noticed was that in the browser homepage links, Google has hxxp:// against it instead of http://. Not sure if that's significant.

Hi Borislav, thanks for replying. I'm sorry for going straight to combofix on my own, I had read other threads where this was advised so I assumed it might save time. In any case I haven't noticed any symptoms since I ran combofix, all pop ups are gone. I don't know if the machine is currently infected but I ran the tests you asked for anyway and the logs are attached:

You have a problem with MBAM.

Step 1

Please, uninstall the following applications:

  1. BitTornado 0.3.17

You can read, how to do this here:

Step 2

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply
Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.
    C:\Program Files\Java
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java
    C:\Windows\Sun
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

Step 3

Please do the following to see if it resolves the issue.

Temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and other security software while installing and running.

Windows XP:

  • Click on Start and select Control Panel
  • Open Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here
    • Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version
    • Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or post to ask and we'll explain how to do it.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

  1. JavaRa log
  2. MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware log
  3. a new fresh DDS log only

Hi,

Ok, I did the things you asked. First time I ran JavaRa it crashed on me, but 2nd time it ran ok. I've attached the MBAM, JavaRa and DDS logs, all in 1 zip file. But there is something I need to tell you:

[*]Keep me informed about any changes.

Something changed, I got hit with Antimalware Doctor again, new infection. I went to a website, same as the one I originally got infected from, except I never knew that site was the original cause of the problem. Now I know, will not go back there again.

In case you need a HJT log and GMER rootkit log again I ran these and attached an additional zip file with results.

GMER_and_HJT.zip

Please read the following through carefully so that you understand what to do.

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.
  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK. (If Vista, click on the Vista Orb and copy and paste the following into the Search field. (make sure you include the quotation marks) Then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter.)
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\TDSSKiller.txt -v
  • If it says "Hidden service detected" DO NOT type anything in. Just press Enter on your keyboard to not do anything to the file.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Allow it to do so.
  • When it is done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

I don't know if this is significant but the windows update icon shows in the system tray and when I click it is says "Windows found 1 update". When I install this with Express Install it seems to complete but then 5 mins later the windows update icon is back again and it again shows me 1 update. Has happened 3 times in a row, seems strange behaviour?

Let's check. Delete your copy of ComboFix and then:

**Note: If you need more detailed information, please visit the web page of ComboFix in BleepingComputer. **

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper.

Please download ComboFix from

Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Open Tools -> Options -> Main tab
    • Set to Always ask me where to Save the files.

[*]During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

CF_download_FF.gif

CF_download_rename.gif

[*]It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.

[*]Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

[*]Close any open browsers.

[*]Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

-----------------------------------------------------------

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[*]Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it will produce a report for you.

[*]Please post the C:\Combo-Fix.txt for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Hi,

I'm having problems stopping me doing the above. When I get to the part of your instructions where I have to disable my anti-virus, I can't do so. Each time I open AVG user interface it is popping up a resident shield alert saying C:\Windows\apenicimay.dll is infected with Trojan Adload_r.AHW. This pops up continously and stops me getting to the settings for resident shield so I cannot disable it. I took photos of the messages (attached).

So should I run combofix without disabling AVG, or let AVG heal the trojan it found? I can't see any alternative options to those two courses of action but if there's something else I should do please tell me. Thanks again!

I'm now in safe mode with networking but I can't get to the AVG user interface to disable resident shield. When I try to open it I just get the AVG command line composer. Does this mean resident shield is already disabled because I'm in safe mode or do I still need to find a way to switch it off before I run Combo-fix?

Save the file to your desktop and name it CFScript.txt

Then drag the CFScript.txt into the ComboFix.exe as shown in the screenshot below.

Sorry I didn't get the chance to try your above, when I went back to Combo-Fix (which was showing me the error message about AVG), I tried to exit it using the X symbol in top right but it behaved like I clicked OK. It displayed a new message saying Combofix will now run but kindly note this is at your own risk as AVG is still running. So then I tried to kill it from task manager, but it ran the scan anyway.

I have attached the log.

Something else I noticed, when my PC boots into Windows I get an error message saying C:\windows\apenicimay.dll cannot be found.

Ok, I followed your directions and AVG is now OK with no error message when I startup. I ran a full scan with AVG which showed up nothing except a broken digital signature on a file.

Then I updated MBAM and ran a full scan, this showed up a problem! Log below:
