Windows IE "Program Compatibility Assistant" pop-up

Recommended Posts

Getting messages on opening files with media player and some streaming sites, running XP. Popup titled "Program Compatibility Assistant". Message says "This program requires a missing Windows Codec". The popup takes me to a payed site for a codex.

I ran both Malwarebytes and Symantec Antivirus systems. Found some Trojans and spyware which were removed, however the problem still persists.

Not sure what to do next or how to get rid of the problem.

I've tried everything I could think of but the problem still persists. I really would appreciate any help with this issue. From another thread for a similar problem, it suggested removing older version of Java. I did this but nothing has changed.

Thank you for any assistance.
