Loss of dispaly colors after scan

Recommended Posts

Hello... this is my first post so please excuse any newbie mistakes.

i've come to this forum because my problem started after i had completed a Malwarebytes scan on my computer about 2 weeks ago. My system lost color. i'm now looking at a monochrome greenishbluish tint on my screen. No white.. no yellow... a splash of pink,i guess thats supposed to be red. My OS is XP Professional....IBM Vista. Feels like i'm looking at my screen through sunglasses. Oh yes, the scan showed no infections. This color change appeared right after i closed the log and the program.

Here's what i've eliminated as the possible problem...

Monitor, Cables, Connections, Drivers, Video Card.

Unfortunately i've had a problem with Malwarebytes before sometime in March or April right after the scan completed, different computer. IE would not load.. i ended up having to do a total reinstall. This time i had hoped you would be able to help resolve this issue before having to go to such lengths. It appears to me that the somhow the default colors have either been replaced or removed. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :D

Hi -

You have confused me with this statement

My OS is XP Professional....IBM Vista.

Please follow the directions below first - Then we can look at your other problems -

To Fully Remove and Reinstall a Fresh New Copy of Malwarebytes - Read Carefully

Windows XP:

  • Click on Start and select Control Panel
  • Open Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important !
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here

It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so, very important

After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here

Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version only -

Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.

Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask me and I'll explain how to do it.

Windows Vista and Windows 7:

  • Click on the Start button and select Control Panel
  • Click on Programs and Features
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important !
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here

Here's what i've eliminated as the possible problem...

Monitor, Cables, Connections, Drivers, Video Card.

Hello and :D

Sorry to hear you are having problems. Not sure Malwarebytes can cause this issue, it could just be a coincident that it happened at the same time you ran the scan....

A little more info would be good....

1. Did you have an infection? Can you supple a log of what was removed?

2. How did you eliminate the above items. Did you try using a different monitor, or use the monitor in question on a different computer to test it?

3. Is this a desktop or laptop? Sounds like its a desktop (sorry some folks call the screen on a laptop a monitor also)

4. Are you using Windows XP or are you using Windows Vista.

Lets get those answered so we can try to help you better.

Hello and thank you for the welcome,

In answer to your questions...

1. No i did not have an infection. It was just a routine scan i do on my system. J ust checking to make sure everything was as it should be.

2. Since i have more than one computer i was able to test the monitor and system by switching out the monitors. The monitors worked fine but the computer gave the same result on both monitors. Green Green Green.

3. Desktop

4. Windows XP Professional

Hi, condi:

The experts here will help you out, and I am just a home user, but your thread about "green screen" caught my eye relating to a thread I just spotted at another forum.

Not sure at all if this even applies to your situation, but here is the link, just in case:

http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.ph...8&t=1929983 (post #2 talks about "green screen" issues with Flash and FF).

Have you checked to make sure no pins on the VGA connector are bent or broken?

STEP 02

Have you tried plugging the monitor into another computer and does it work okay or not?

STEP 03

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please download ERUNT from here
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Double click on erunt-setup.exe to Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • Use the default install settings but say NO to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this option later if you wish.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup.
    • Note: the default location is C:\Windows\ERDNT which is acceptable.

[*]Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.

    [*]Click on OK

[*]Then click on YES to create the folder.

Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

I see that you have posted your logs, and also updated your video drivers to the version that AdvancedSetup has asked you too. If you are still getting the green screen, then we need to look at other posibilites.

You can try the steps that daledoc1 provided you in reference to Flash, it would not hurt to try.....

I don't remember if you have mentioned this or not, so I will ask, when you first turn on the computer and you get your BIOS info on the screen (computer logo) or if you are in Windows Command Prompt only, or safe mode, do you also have a green screen? How about if you boot from a Bootable Rescue CD, is the display also Green?

I myself think that it is a hardware problem with your video card. I know you said you ran a diagnostic through device manager and it came back fine, but I don't tend to trust those test too much.

If you have the means, I would try replacing the video card with another one, and install the drivers for it and see what you get. I work in a shop and I have the means to do it as I have cards sitting on my shelf that help me for testing, I know this does you no good, but if you could find a card someplace to test. We have a local Good Will store that sells video cards starting at $7.95 maybe you can look so see if there are thrift stores available in your area where you can get one.

Hi Firefox. Apparently i didn't do something right and resubmitted my scans to Advancedsetup. I did take a look at daledoc1 suggestion but my system didn't require any changes. It was a good try though. As for the video card, you are right about the diagnostics being wrong sometimes and i have concidered that i just need to replace the video card. I do have a new one that i've never used and it is compatable with my current system. So if all else fails i'll try that. If that fails i guess its a reintall. :)

As for the Green Screen... Yes, i do see a green tint in safe mode and Bios info screen. I haven't tried from a boot disc because i haven't had any problems with booting up. Didn't think about trouble shooting that way.

It just seems to me that a driver or drivers are missing or corrupted or i could restore the default color codes in the registry. i don't know. I first learned about using hexidecimal codes with windows 95. much easier to make the adjustments back then. i thought i could do the same with windows xp but apparently not. i'll just be patient and wait to see what AdvanceSetup can do and go from there.

Thanks for hanging in there with me. Initally this seemed like such a simple task.

Swapping out the video card is the FIRST thing I would have tried. :)

Well if you are getting the green screen even in DOS (Bios screen) and in safe mode, then its more than likely that video card because both the Bios screen and the safe mode do not really use vidoe drives, it uses a generic driver built on to the card just to display in basic mode so you can see on the screen. But if you see green always then replace the video card....
