Recommended Posts

Whenever I start up the computer Outlook Express and Internet Explorer automaticaly open up, even though they are not in any startup folder. This is my first time using HijackThis so a detailed explaination would be nice. Thanks.

Hi,

Since you have Windows Defender running in the background, it may have interfered with a registry key set to run only once:

O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [shockwave Updater] C:\Windows\system32\Adobe\Shockwave 11\SwHelper_1151601.exe -Update -1151601 -"Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0; Trident/4.0; SLCC1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30618; OfficeLiveConnector.1.3; OfficeLivePatch.0.0)" -"http://www.miniclip.com/games/pizza-hot/en/"

After the "Runonce" was performed, Windows deletes that key again, but in your case, your Windows Defender may have blocked the deletion of that key.

Anyway, Please temporary disable Windows Defender:

To turn real-time protection off

Open Windows Defender. (Click Start, click Programs, and then click Windows Defender.)

Click Tools, and then click General Settings.

Under Real-time protection options, Uncheck the Turn on real-time protection (recommended) check box.

Then click Save.

Then, Rightclick HijackThis and select to Run as adminstrator.

Click scan.

There, check the following entry:

O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [shockwave Updater] C:\Windows\system32\Adobe\Shockwave 11\SwHelper_1151601.exe -Update -1151601 -"Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0; Trident/4.0; SLCC1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30618; OfficeLiveConnector.1.3; OfficeLivePatch.0.0)" -"http://www.miniclip.com/games/pizza-hot/en/"

Click the fix checked button below.

Let me know if this has fixed your problem.

Ok, I did what you said and then restarted the computer. Internet Explorer and Outlook Express still open up. Did you want me to turn Windows Defender back on or just leave it off? I also ran another scan with HijackThis and, just in case it helps, here it is:

Hi,

I actually have no clue what other program which starts up with your Windows may cause Outlook and Internet explorer to open. Are you actually talking about your browser that opens after reboot and your mailprogram? So you see this?

Since when did this start? Have you installed something new recently? Or updated something recently. Anyway, please let me know when this exactly started, so I can verify the date/time in the next log I will ask so I can see what program may cause this.

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.

  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

---------------------------------------------------

Copy and paste the contents of DDS.txt in your next reply. Do not copy and paste the contents of Attach.txt, but attach it to your reply instead.

Also, I remember that this has happened with Norton Antivirus in the past. For some reason, Norton Antivirus caused Outlook express and Internet Explorer to open after reboot. This was caused by the anti spam feature in Norton.

You don't have Norton here, but G Data, so I wonder if it may something the same here.

Internet Explorer opens up to my homepage every time the computer boots, and outlook express opens as well. I have no idea when it started doing this but it was a long time ago. I didn't really think much of it but now I decided I should try and do soemthing about it.

I had BitDefender before it my time out and I opted for a change. The same thing happened with BitDefender too.

Since I do not even have a guess as to the time, should I still try DDS?

This isn't an urgent problem and it doesn't appear to be harming anything so it's okay if you have better things to do.

Ok, let's do the following to find out what program is causing this...

Go to start and type: msconfig

This will open the System Configuration Utility.

In there, select the the tab startup

Click the button "Disable all" below, so all entries there will become unchecked

Click apply and OK.

Then reboot.

After reboot you will get a message that something has been changed in your system configuration. This is normal.

Let me know if Outlook and IE still open after reboot.

Ok.

This means that one of the applications we disabled to start up with Windows was causing this. You've had a LOT of programs set to start up with Windows which aren't really needed to startup with Windows anyway, so we can leave these enabled.

OPen msconfig again, tab startup and check the following again:

G DATA AntiVirus

Then reboot.

After reboot you will get the message that something was modified in your system configuration. Just check the box where it says not to display this message again.

Ok, I did this and Internet and Outlook don't open up on startup.

Do I go through the list of things and see which is causing the problem? Or do I just leave it with only G Data starting? Or pick the useful ones? Or something else?

Wow... Well, I feel quite dumb right now...

I played around with disabling the different start-up applications and I found the problem. Turns out, Acer Smartboot had added Internet Explorer and Outlook Express automatically because they were frequently used programs.

I have disabled them now and turned off the Automatic adding of programs. :P

Anyways, thank you for your dedicated assistance and my apologies if I wasted your time.
