Right-click context menu and scan functionality

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Don't know if this is mentioned elsewhere, did a quick search and came up with nothing on the surface, not going to spend half an hour reading through 45 posts. Sorry, moderators, if I'm dredging up an old issue.

My issue is this: when using anti-virus and anti-malware programs, one of the features I use most often is to do a file- or folder-specific scan from the right-click context menu.

However, I just tried this using Anti-Malware (after just updating to latest version today), and apparently it does not scan anything beyond the top level.

For instance, if I right-click on a folder and select "Scan with Malwarebytes Anti-malware" from the context menu, the program starts and after a few seconds the log pops up but the program says "0 files scanned." It does NOT scan sub-folders or files within a folder; you have open each folder and specifically select the files within.

For me, this DRASTICALLY decreases the usefulness of this program. Just saying....

It always scans subfolders and files for me, I just tested and verified on a folder containing 1047 files and folders and they were all scanned and the copies of Spycar (an anti-spyware testing suite similar to EICAR which is used to test antivirus) which resided several folders deep were scanned and detected.

Thanks for the feedback, I thought it was a "feature," never noticed the problem before, might have something to do with the last update I performed which actually installed over the older version. Sounds like maybe I need to do a clean install. Will do when I get five minutes. I'll check back in the next 24 hours or so and report how it went.

Sorry for the double post, I looked for the "edit" button and couldn't find one.

Here's the thing, I haven't reinstalled but thought I'd give it a try now that I'm in a new Windows session.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it don't.

And it only gets glitchy with folders that have names that are long and/or contain special characters -- particularly brackets as in [].

I ran a "test" with one such folder -- let's say it was called "AB-Abcdefg123[dddd.eeeee]."

I scanned it and had no luck. 0 files scanned.

Then I renamed it to "AB-Abcdefg" and it scanned all files and subfolders within.

Then I undid the rename so it was back to the original "AB-Abcdefg123[dddd.eeeee]" and AGAIN it scanned all the files and subfolders fine.

Then, without doing anything else, I closed Anti-Malware and right-clicked to scan that same folder again, and no luck this time -- it didn't work.

If I repeat those steps with the "troublesome" folder -- rename, scan, undo the rename, scan, then scan again -- I get the exact same results. When undoing the rename so it reverts back to the original name, I get ONE successful scan and that's it. Weird huh?

I think I'll uninstall and reinstall, this cannot be normal.
