Help - Firefox redirect persists after Virtumonde cleanup

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I had a virtumonde/vundo infection it was causing winlogon to blue screen of death when I tried to shutdown. It was also causing Firefox to redirect links from google via two different sites one with a curly backward 6 and the other with a green globe icon. Similar to the description I found at:

http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=44345

I was struggling to get rid of it when I stumbled accross malwarebyte's anti-malware tool, and it seems to have done the job. However the redirect links problem persists. I've also noticed that internet explorer 8 makes a double click noise when I single click links from google, I'm not sure if this is related.

Please help.

Below is the last anti-malware log (which appears to be clean), and the dds log. I've also attached as a zip file the GMER Rootkit Scanner log and the other dds log.

Thanks in advance,

Qaz.

Hello qazchris! Welcome to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forums!

My name is Borislav and I will be glad to help you solve your problems with malware. Before we begin, please note the following:

  • The process of cleaning your system may take some time, so please be patient.
  • Follow my instructions step by step if there is a problem somewhere, stop and tell me.
  • Stay with the topic until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
  • Instructions that I give are for your system only!
  • If you don't know or can't understand something please ask.
  • Do not install or uninstall any software or hardware, while work on.
  • Keep me informed about any changes.

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Go to "Update" tab and select "Check for Updates". If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Go to "Scanner" tab and select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Thanks for the help!

There was an update available, I downloaded it then ran quick scan. The log is pasted below (it still couldn't detect anything). I did notice that there were 3 things in the quarantine section from my earlier attempt to remove vundo, they are:

Trojan.Agent - 24/06/2010 - File - C:\WINDOWS\system32\winldd32.dll

Trojan.Dialer - 24/06/2010 - Registry Key - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\winldd32

Trojan.Downloader - 24/06/2010 - Registry Key - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSMGR

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Qaz

Please read the following through carefully so that you understand what to do.

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.
  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK. (If Vista, click on the Vista Orb and copy and paste the following into the Search field. (make sure you include the quotation marks) Then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter.)
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\TDSSKiller.txt -v
  • If it says "Hidden service detected" DO NOT type anything in. Just press Enter on your keyboard to not do anything to the file.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Allow it to do so.
  • When it is done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

It didn't say that any hidden service was detected, but it did seem to find an infected file. It asked to reboot, which I did, and the log file is copy-pasted below. When I logged back on, windows update kicked in and started downloading something, I set it not to install anything unless I tell it to, but I fear the next time I restart the computer it may take the opportunity to install something without my permission.
