Need some help :-(

Recommended Posts

My MBAM registered copy (version 1.46, up to date) periodically keeps finding some malware. It seems to get rid of it but a few days later it is back. I definitely could use a little help with this one! Thanks in advance!

Here is the DDS log:

Hello Andy! Welcome to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forums!

My name is Borislav and I will be glad to help you solve your problems with malware. Before we begin, please note the following:

  • The process of cleaning your system may take some time, so please be patient.
  • Follow my instructions step by step if there is a problem somewhere, stop and tell me I then I'll tell you what to do.
  • Stay with the topic until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
  • Instructions that I give are for your system only!
  • If you don't know or can't understand something please ask.
  • Do not install or uninstall any software or hardware, while work on.
  • Keep me informed of any changes.

Step 1

Please, uninstall the following applications:

  1. LimeWire PRO 5.1.2

You can read, how to this here:

Step 2

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply
Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.
    C:\Program Files\Java
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java
    C:\Windows\Sun
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

Step 3

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Go to "Update" tab and select "Check for Updates". If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Go to "Scanner" tab and select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

In your next reply, please include these log(s) in this sequence:

  1. JavaRa log
  2. MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware log
  3. a new fresh DDS log only

Thank you for the quick answer and your time!

Please, uninstall the following applications:

  1. LimeWire PRO 5.1.2

Limewire has been removed. Actually, I haven't used it in some time now so I will not miss it. ;-)

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

The program was downloaded and ran.

All Java folders found have been deleted.

[*]Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

[*]Go to "Update" tab and select "Check for Updates". If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.

[*]Go to "Scanner" tab and select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.

MBAM was updated and quickscan completed. Nothing found this time. Log included below.

Please note that MBAM would periodically find something - every day or two, but not on all scans. I don't know if this will help you or not - apologies if I am including extra stuff needlessly - please take a look at the MBAM quarantine list attached as an image.

You still have a problem?

Nothing is shown as a problem at this moment.

All MBAM quick scans are clean for now but I am not sure what what will happen a day or two from now since that has been the pattern before. Do you think it may be clean at this time?

Also, should I install a new version of Java or just leave well enough alone?

To be more sure, please come back after the weekend and let me know how are things to know what to do. Is it okay for you?

Of course, and thanks again!

I will continue to run MBAM quick scans and once a day full scan to see if it finds anything.

Will post again if I find something or on Monday.

I found a bit of an oddity in the logs tonight when I got home from work. A few IP numbers were blocked:

21:53:13	Betty	IP-BLOCK	62.213.100.100
21:53:15 Betty IP-BLOCK 62.213.100.100
21:53:22 Betty IP-BLOCK 62.213.100.100
21:53:22 Betty IP-BLOCK 95.211.100.89
21:53:25 Betty IP-BLOCK 95.211.100.89
21:53:31 Betty IP-BLOCK 95.211.100.89

At first I had no idea who or what triggered that but a little detective work showed that the following URL triggers this:

http://belgium.worldcupblog.org/

The web page displays but apperently there is something in it that tries to go to that IP address. Is this a flase alarm or do you think there is a problem with that site?

I have a answer from our team:

it's the openx ad server that's to blame for this (again). It's become a haven for malvertisements.

Let's check what caused it:

Please read the following through carefully so that you understand what to do.

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.
  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK. (If Vista, click on the Vista Orb and copy and paste the following into the Search field. (make sure you include the quotation marks) Then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter.)
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\TDSSKiller.txt -v
  • If it says "Hidden service detected" DO NOT type anything in. Just press Enter on your keyboard to not do anything to the file.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Allow it to do so.
  • When it is done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

You probably have this information already someplace but those IP numbers are registered as follows:

Here some message for you from our Research Engineer:

Maybe they are not guilty, but are simply victims.

Now:

**Note: If you need more detailed information, please visit the web page of ComboFix in BleepingComputer. **

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper.

Please download ComboFix from

Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Open Tools -> Options -> Main tab
    • Set to Always ask me where to Save the files.

[*]During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

CF_download_FF.gif

CF_download_rename.gif

[*]It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.

[*]Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

[*]Close any open browsers.

[*]Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

-----------------------------------------------------------

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[*]Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it will produce a report for you.

[*]Please post the C:\Combo-Fix.txt for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Maybe, but a problem either way. ;-)

Please post the C:\Combo-Fix.txt for further review.

Done.

It wasn't as simple as described. The process did ask for the CD (I have the XP CD slip streamed with SP3) and it completed without apparent issues. During the process MBAM warned about CDROM.SYS. Running it a second time all seemed well and completed OK.

I tried to go to Microsoft Update and, of course, MS insists on IE, no Firefox allowed. But, it seemed that there was some issue with my copy of IE 8 (which I seldom use) and the update failed.

I ended up reinstalling SP3, removing IE8 and installing it again before I was able to successfully complete the MS update process.

At this point in time MS indicates all my updates are up to date and all seems quiet again.

Please download to your Desktop: Dr.Web CureIt

  • After the file has downloaded, disable your current Anti-Virus and disconnect from the Internet
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file, then click the Start button, then the OK button to perform an Express Scan.
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click on the Complete scan radio button.
  • Then click on the Settings menu on top, the select Change Settings or press the F9 key. You can also change the Language
  • Choose the Scanning tab and I recomend leaving the Heuristic analysis enabled (this can lead to False Positives though)
  • On the File types tab ensure you select All files
  • Click on the Actions tab and set the following:
    • Objects Infected objects = Cure, Incurable objects = Move, Suspicious objects = Report
    • Infected packages Archive = Move, E-mails = Report, Containers = Move
    • Malware Adware = Move, Dialers = Move, Jokes = Move, Riskware = Move, Hacktools = Move
    • Do not change the Rename extension - default is: #??
    • Leave the default save path for Moved files here: %USERPROFILE%\DoctorWeb\Quarantine\
    • Leave prompt on Action checked

[*]On the Log file tab leave the Log to file checked.

[*]Leave the log file path alone: %USERPROFILE%\DoctorWeb\CureIt.log

    [*]Log mode = Append

    [*]Encoding = ANSI

[*]Details Leave Names of file packers and Statistics checked.

[*]Limit log file size = 2048 KB and leave the check mark on the Maximum log file size.

[*]On the General tab leave the Scan Priority on High

[*]Click the Apply button at the bottom, and then the OK button.

[*]On the right side under the Dr Web Anti-Virus Logo you will see 3 little buttons. Click the left VCR style Start button.

[*]In this mode it will scan Boot sectors of all disks, All removable media, and all local drives

[*]The more files and folders you have the longer the scan will take. On large drives it can take hours to complete.

[*]When the Cure option is selected, an additional context menu will open. Select the necessary action of the program, if the curing fails.

[*]Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the files.

[*]This will move it to the %USERPROFILE%\DoctorWeb\Quarantine\ folder if it can't be cured. (in this case we need samples)

[*]After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list

[*]Save the report to your Desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv

    [*]Close Dr.Web Cureit.

[*]Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.

[*]After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously to your Desktop in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

Whew! That drweb sure took a while! :P

OK, all done - a couple of notes. The items drweb found may or may not be problems. The first one, Postit, is a very old program to send text files through smtp, going back to Windows 3.x or 95 days. The illustrator one I have no recollection about as it too has been copied from computer to computer over the years. Neither has been used in a very long time and all instances were deleted by drweb just to be safe.

  1. Please download Dial-A-Fix from one of the following mirrors:

[*]Extract the zip file to your desktop.

[*]Double click Dial-a-Fix.exe to start the program.

[*]Press the green double checkmark box (Looks like this: checkmark.png)

[*]UNcheck "Empty Temp Folders", as well as "Adjust Time/Date" in the prep section. The prep section should then look like this:

[*]When the window looks like this, press the GO button in the bottom of the window.

[*]Exit/Close Dial-A-Fix

Seemed all quiet before running Dial-A-Fix and all is still quiet.

I am going to guess that Dial-A-Fix does not know Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 since I got windows such as:

The error 127 repeated for IE components but all else was uneventful.

1. Download IEFix, unzip it to your Desktop, and run it.

2. Click the Apply button.

3. You'll be prompted for the Operating System CD or the Service Pack Files location:

  • If you're using Windows XP, insert the Operating System CD. For OEM systems, point to the Operating System source path when prompted. If you've applied a Service Pack separately, you need to insert the Slipstreamed Operating System CD (if you have one) or point the installer to the ServicePack source path when prompted (see the image below). Mention the path as "C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386" or "C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles"
  • If you don't have the Windows installation CD, and if the installation source files are not present in the hard disk, you may click Cancel when you see a dialog similar to the image below. IEFix will continue with DLL registration part.

  • Restart Windows.

Umm.. I am a little confused, sorry. A couple of things:

  1. I have very recently (a couple of days ago) downloaded and re-installed IE8 from Microsoft and applied all patches to it.
  2. The IEFix utility states that "This utility has not been tested under Internet Explorer 7." and would also not know IE8.

I am just wondering what it will do with IE8 in the system....

Done.

The process completed OK although, as expected, it downgraded IE to version 6 (from the CD). This is not a problem as I can always bring it back to version 8 later and I use Firefox as a rule, anyway.
