Is MBAM alone good enough for PC security?

Recommended Posts

MBAM is great at detecting malware so I purchased the full protection and so far I love it. My only concern is recently I recieved a large pop-up on the internet followed by an exclaimation box telling me to click 'ok' to install an antivirus of some sort, which was obviously an attempt to make me download spyware to my computer, so I clicked the X. So my question is, is MBAM by itself good enough for protection? I don't have any complaints other than that recent ad.

Even though this program is excellent at detecting & removing a lot of malware, there's always stuff out there that any program can miss. I definitely recommend having some sort of antivirus product installed too. (& using more than one antispyware/malware program to remove crap)

I have found Eset's Nod32 is very good. AVG free antivirus is also good if you do not want to pay for an antivirus.

Okay then, I will get one of the free anti viruses. Which one is the absolute best out there? I have used AVG Free before, and liked it until 8.0 when it gave too many features I didn't need.

Also, what about Windows Defender? I disabled it. Should I turn it back on?

Windows defender (bleh) is a personal thing. If you like the program, leave it on and installed. If you do not, remove it. AVG, Antivir, AVAST are all decent scanners, however, AntiVir ranks highest in 0day detection. Unfortunatly, their really is no one single best product that will proactively catch everything.

It is? Since when...? Not even AV Comparatives has looked at it.

Well since it comes from far east, it isn't very known, BUT if you take the time to check it out, trust me, you'll find more feautures than Avast, AVG and Avira offer and good detections rates.

As said by a few of the other members here, layered protection is the best approach. I also agree with JeanInMontana in saying that AVG has gone downhill since the release of AVG 8.0. There are several ads that appear in the application and it is starting to become bloated.

Rising AV is the subject of an active thread at Wilders. It may be a good idea to review that thread before taking the plunge and installing RAV.

My configuration:

AVG 8.0 Free

Avira Rootkit Detection

Now the question:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware or Superantispyware

I know this is malwarebytes forum, but which one is better and why? :D

Well they are very very close in detection and removal rates, I keep them both as on-demand scanners, but I like MBAM better because of its nice logo, minimalistic, simple and clean GUI and the super fast scanning of course (2 mins when SAS takes 20).

So you know, when I want to run a scan every week and so, I run a quick one with MBAM.

I mean exactly that.

MBAM is just anti-malware, it's not fully fledged anti-virus, no offence intended to people behind it :D

Also, have a look at the post #2 in this thread, by Marcin. There he states that MBAM alone is not enough :) If that's not enough of a statement that MBAM is not AV then I don't know what is.

not sure about why the others think its not good enough protection... I been using JUST Pro for over a year now and its stops anything i have run into, i search warez sites, porn sites, download questionable files etc, and each time something bad has tried to happen, MB Pro stops it dead.... i think and feel its good enough easily.

The real issue is that our technology and research is weighted towards where the AVs are not as strong and by design have always been the low cost addition to the dedicated AV of your choice.

The AVs have no choice but to attempt to detect absolutely everything and this lack of focus allows holes to form. Our research looks at the malware exploiting these hole and makes it a priority. While we also attempt to detect everything, the focus is not evenly distributed.
