Error code 122

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I recently purchased and activated my copy of MalwareBytes Antimalware! First of all I'd like to thank the developers for making such an awesome tool, it pulled me out of the dirt a lot of times in the past. That said, I'm experiencing a weird issue I (think) that my real-time protection is started but I'm not totally sure. In the logfiles i find the following :

08:00:08	Administrator	MESSAGE	Protection started successfully
08:00:11 Administrator ERROR IP protection failed: PfMakeLog failed with error code 122
12:14:54 Administrator MESSAGE Protection started successfully
12:14:58 Administrator ERROR IP protection failed: PfMakeLog failed with error code 122

It's in every logfile i find, so pretty much everytime i boot my PC.

Can anyone explain what this error means and maybe how to fix it?

Cheers.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply. I really appreciate it.

I visited the link you mentioned, however it seems like MalwareBytes isn't blocking the website. I can see the content and the sentence: "If you are able to reach this page it means that IP protection is disabled on your machine."

So I guess this is the proof that IP-blocking isn't enabled?

Yes, it appears so. That site should have been blocked so something must be preventing it from loading properly.

Please do the following:

Please exclude the following files from your antivirus:

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well

For Windows XP:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

For Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\SysWoW64\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

The FAQ contains examples of setting file exclusions for some known AV products.

Also, if your firewall and/or antivirus software has any sort of website protection or web guard then please add the following as a trusted/excluded site in your security software:

data-cdn.mbamupdates.com

Please let me know if that resolved the issue or not.

Thanks :)

Hi, once again thanks for the reply.

For your information: I'm using XP 64-bit and my anti-virus is MSE, not using any other kind of protection/security-like software.

I added the exclusions to MSE following the mentioned FAQ, after a reboot, still the same result :)

Any other ideas?

Yes, please give this a try to see if it corrects the issue, it's possible that the driver just didn't install properly:

Windows XP:

  • Click on Start and select Control Panel
  • Open Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • After the computer restarts, install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here
    • Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version
    • Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration.

Try the test IP I linked to in my previous post to see if it is now blocked or not. Please let me know if that fixes the issue or not.

Thanks :)

Hey :)

I followed your steps, uninstalled, registered and reanbled the protection mode, saw there was only one logfile left. Opened it and:

21:29:22	Administrator	MESSAGE	Protection started successfully
21:29:26 Administrator ERROR IP protection failed: PfMakeLog failed with error code 122

Hmm I guess it might just be my OS, or does Malwarebytes work just fine under XP 64-bit?

Hello again :)

After speaking with the developers I have been informed that currently IP protection is incompatible with XP x64, although it does work with XP x86, Vista x86 and x64 as well as 7 x86 and x64.

It's unfortunate, but at least it explains the issue.

Please let us know if you require any further assistance.

Thanks :)

I'm not sure if it can be or will be corrected in the future. I know the developers are currently hard at work on version 1.47, but I'm not sure where XP Pro x64 support is on their list as very few users are running it since it wasn't available from Microsoft through normal channels. It's possible that it can't be done since XP x64 works so differently from the 32 bit version of XP and still very different from Vista and 7 x64 as well since Microsoft made so many driver compatibility improvements in Vista and 7 for x64.

It is possible though, and if it's something they can fix I'm sure that they will :).

Hey Exile and Pierre.,

If you don't mind me jumping in here,

Exile,

Do you know if HostsMan is compatible with XP x64?

Reason I am asking is that even though HostsMan hosts manager only blocks URL's vs IP addresses, since IP blocking does not work on XP x64, at least having a hosts file manager (if he does not already) it would still offer Pierre. additional protection that he doesn't have already.
