As for the best schedule, that all depends on your surfing habbits and how much you use your computer. Everyones needs are different.

I have mine set as follows:

I update mine every hour on the hour. (this insures I have the latest update when I run any scans)

I have mine to scan daily everyday at 12PM (thats my lunch hour).
