News 11 Today & Other Random IE Pop Ups

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I could use some help. A couple of days ago, I was infected with AV Security Suite. I tried disinfecting with limited success. Currently, I can run SpyBot S&D, Ad-Aware, MBAM, AVG Anti-Virus Scan and AVG Anti-Rootkit Scan and they all report nothing found. And yet, periodically I'll get IE windows popping open displaying random websites, but most often the News.11.Today.com site.

I have tried following the "I'm Infected" instructions. I have succeeded at everything except GMER. I have tried several times and most times, my computer either froze up or rebooted itself. I tried running it in Safe Mode with no luck. I finally got it to run to the end. It took about 11 hours and then froze up (quit responding) when I tried to save the ark.txt file.

I am attaching the other logs/files as directed. Can you help?

Thanks...

Hello cannuke! Welcome to MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware Forums!

My name is Borislav and I will be glad to help you solve your problems with malware. Before we begin, please note the following:

  • The process of cleaning your system may take some time, so please be patient.
  • Follow my instructions step by step if there is a problem somewhere, stop and tell me I then I'll tell you what to do.
  • Stay with the topic until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
  • Instructions that I give are for your system only!
  • If you don't know or can't understand something please ask.
  • Do not install or uninstall any software or hardware, while work on.
  • Keep me informed of any changes.

Step 1

I also see you have Viewpoint installed...

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player

Step 2

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Go to "Update" tab and select "Check for Updates". If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Go to "Scanner" tab and select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

In your next reply, please include these log(s) in this sequence:

  1. MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware log
  2. a new fresh DDS log only

Borislav,

Thanks for coming to my aid. It is very much appreciated.

First of all, while waiting for a reply, I ran ESET On-Line Scanner. Now that we have a dialogue started, I won't do anything else unless directed so that I don't inadvertantly derail your attempts to help. It found three apparent problems and repaired them. In case it is of benefit to you, I will attach the resulting log.

I did as you suggested and removed Viewpoint and then ran MBAM and DDS. MBAM didn't report any problems. Logs are attached.

Thanks again...

Carl

**Note: If you need more detailed information, please visit the web page of ComboFix in BleepingComputer. **

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper.

Please download ComboFix from

Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Open Tools -> Options -> Main tab
    • Set to Always ask me where to Save the files.

[*]During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

CF_download_FF.gif

CF_download_rename.gif

[*]It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.

[*]Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

[*]Close any open browsers.

[*]Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

-----------------------------------------------------------

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[*]Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it will produce a report for you.

[*]Please post the C:\Combo-Fix.txt for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Borislav,

I have done as asked. A few points:

(1) ComboFix installed MS Recovery Console as expected.

(2) Then ComboFix gave a message about detecting rootkit activity and prompted for a reboot --- which I did.

(3) When shutting down, a MS blue screen appearing saying, "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". I turned the laptop off and then back on.

(4) Laptop rebooted normally, except that AVG Anti-Virus didn't restart and the Windows Security Center showed it hadn't restarted.

(5) I rebooted and AVG still didn't restart. I started it manually and now it seems to restart. I re-enabled its features (I had disabled them as directed).

(6) IE told me that it was no longer my default browser... I made it the default browser again.

Is any of this unexpected?

In any case, I am attaching the ComboFix Log as directed.

Thanks once again for your continued help...

Carl

Borislav,

How are things now? I'm feeling much better now... thanks for asking (ha ha).

Seriously, I'm not sure if my laptop is better or not. The popups only happened rarely. I haven't seen the "News 11 Today" IE window pop up in awhile (since yesterday). I'm not sure that I have had any problems yet today. I had an IE window pop up earlier today, but it may have been a legitimate pop up because it was somewhat related to a site that I was viewing. It's hard to know. I'm going to be paranoid for awhile.

Do you think that my laptop might be clean? Should I simply monitor the situation for awhile and let you know if something comes up? If all looks well, I could simply confirm in a day or two if you'd like.

Please advise... and... once again, I really do appreciate all of your kind help.

Carl

Yes, now these pop-ups should gone.

Hi,

It has been more than three days and there is no sign of infection. I think it is safe to clean up now. When you send your guidance on what to do, I'd appreciate it if you would address the following:

(1) Is it okay to run Defogger to re-enable CD emulation.

(2) Combofix wiped out RegClean (the registry cleaner from the team at Microsoft). It may have had a virus (or Combofix thought it did). Is it okay to reinstall RegClean?

(3) I use AVG Anti-Virus. After running Combofix, the tray icon no longer appears and I don't seem to be able to get it back. Do you know how to fix this?

(4) Combofix left behind a subdirectory named QooBox on the C:\ root directory (it contains a quarantine directory). Can this subdirectory be deleted?

Thanks very much for all of your kind help.

Carl

Good! :)

(2) Combofix wiped out RegClean (the registry cleaner from the team at Microsoft). It may have had a virus (or Combofix thought it did). Is it okay to reinstall RegClean?

We advise you not to do so.

http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/02/reg...weaking_13.html

(3) I use AVG Anti-Virus. After running Combofix, the tray icon no longer appears and I don't seem to be able to get it back. Do you know how to fix this?

See here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...st&p=649843

Now:

Step 1

* Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /uninstall

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /

Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Step 2

To enable CD Emulation programs using DeFogger please perform these steps:

  1. Please download DeFogger to your desktop.
  2. Once downloaded, double-click on the DeFogger icon to start the tool.
  3. The application window will now appear. You should now click on the Enable button to enable your CD Emulation drivers
  4. When it prompts you whether or not you want to continue, please click on the Yes button to continue
