I got nailed with a malware attack the other day. I knew it right away because a Java logo that would appear on my screen and my computer slowed down. I had been getting it alot lately. Instead of waiting for the warnings to pop up I immediately rebooted into safemode and ran MBAM and it turned up 3 infected files, a fake alert and a couple of trojan droppers if I remember correctly, after I got rid of them I noticed things still weren't right with my machine so I ran another MBAM scan and came up with 2 rootkits. Everything seemed fine speed wise but I would get redirected, not all the time but usually after ten minutes, after it happens the first time it happens almost everytime until I close the browser and open a new one. I know now why I got it, my Java was way out of date(I have since updated it)

I used the defogger but I did not get a message asking me if I wanted to reboot so I did it manually, I hope this isn't a problem, anyway I posted my problem in the general discussions forum yesterday and I replied to my own post right away which I didn't know you weren't supposed to do, I'm new here and I apologize for that, it won't happen again.

Here's my DDS log

Hi maxedwell And:

:)

Your PC has a rootkit that has replaced your ide driver with malware. You did a nice Job posting your logs. So we know what's going on. Now lets see if we can nail them back!

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  1. Download ComboFix from below:
    Combofix download
    * IMPORTANT !!! Place combofix.exe on your Desktop
  2. Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.
You can get help on disabling your protection programs here
  3. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  4. As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
    cfRC_screen_1.png
The Windows recovery console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode that allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement.
ComboFix will now automatically install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console onto your computer, which will show up as a new option when booting up your computer. Do not select the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console option when you start your computer unless requested to by a helper.
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see a message that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    cfRC_screen_2.png
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  5. Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  6. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  7. Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Combofix is telling me I have Norton Internet Security 2006 running but I have no clue how to turn it off, I didn't even know I had it. There is no icon on my system tray and I can't find anything named Norton in my program files. In my security center it tells me that Norton Internet Security 2006n is my firewall and it's on but I can't disable it.

Kenny I really appreciate everything but I think I'm just gonna reinstall windows and start from scratch. I'm really sorry for wasting your time but I didn't know I could reinstall without the cd which I don't have, plus combofix makes me nervous. Thanks again and sorry again for wasting your time.

If you feel uncomfortable using Combofix. Lets try TDSSKiller. Your main infection is a TDL3 rootkit.

Please read the following through carefully so that you understand what to do.

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.
  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK. (If Vista, click on the Vista Orb and copy and paste the following into the Search field. (make sure you include the quotation marks) Then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter.)
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\TDSSKiller.txt -v
  • If it says "Hidden service detected" DO NOT type anything in. Just press Enter on your keyboard to not do anything to the file.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Allow it to do so.
  • When it is done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
