Hello ssudarshan75, :)

The Malware Removal - HijackThis Logs forum is used when you suspect/know you have malware, and experts there will check and cure your computer. For general MBAM problem, please post it here first.

Please exclude the following files from your antivirus:

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well

For Windows XP:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

For Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\SysWoW64\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE from it as well

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:

data-cdn.mbamupdates.com

The FAQ contains examples of setting file exclusions for some known AV products

Please post back and let us know how it went. If no joy, would you mind telling the operating system and the antivirus/ internet security/ firewall (with version number) your computer is using.

Please post back if you have further questions.

Thank You :)

Hello ssudarshan75,

Then let's try to run a disk check and see if any errors are shown:

Cut and paste this code into the Run box - Click OK - First close all open programs as the code will restart your system -

CMD /C ECHO Y|CHKDSK C: /R | SHUTDOWN /R /T 30

It should take about 30-45 mins to run and do a full 5 stage check.

Then please try to perform the clean re-instillation process again. Just in case if you forget it:

For Windows XP:

  1. Click on Start and select Control Panel
  2. Open Add/Remove Programs
  3. Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  4. Restart your computer very important
  5. Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  6. It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  7. After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here. Remember to enable your Anti-Virus after installation.

Note:

  • You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version
  • Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask and we'll explain how to do it.

Post back if you have any further problems.

Thank You :)

Hello,

Then let's try an easy one to see...

Show Hidden Files and Folders in Windows XP:

  • Click Start and select My Computer
  • Click the Tools item from the menu at the top of the window (if you don't see Tools press the Alt key on your keyboard and it will appear)
  • Select Folder Options
  • Click the View tab and make sure Show hidden files and folders is selected under Hidden files and folders
  • Next, uncheck the box next to Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • Then, uncheck the box next to Hide extensions for known filetypes
  • Click Apply then click OK

Deleting the definition file of MBAM in Windows XP:

Go to:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\

and delete the "rules.ref" file. Once you've done that, start MBAM and when it shows the error and asks to update. Go ahead with the update.

After performing the steps above, do the following to hide the hidden and system folders again:

Reset Hidden Files and Folders in Windows XP:

  • Click on Start
  • Click Start and select My Computer
  • Click the Tools item from the menu at the top of the window (if you don't see Tools press the Alt key on your keyboard and it will appear)
  • Select Folder Options
  • Click the View tab and make sure Do not show hidden files and folders is selected under Hidden files and folders
  • Next, check the box next to Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • Then, check the box next to Hide extensions for known filetypes
  • Click Apply then click OK

Post back if you have any further problems.

Thank You :)

Hi Tony,

Thankyou so much once again. Deleted the rules.ref file, started MBAM it detected this file was missing and started the download. The moment download completed, the same error came up again. Clicked ok and restarted MBAM, same error, so back to the same boat, pulling my hair what could be going wrong :)

Greetings :)

Please follow the instructions posted in section H of the FAQ located here for AVG 9.

Once that's done, use the above steps for deleting the rules.ref file and having Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware download another copy of it.

Please post back with your results.

Thanks :)

Thankyou, followed instructions in Section H (Exclude files/directories), deleted the rules.ref file. MBAM detected missing database and downloaded a copy, when the download completed, same error being shown :)

@ssudarshan75

If I understand you correctly, you are trying to upgrade from v1.45 to v1.46 and that is when the problem started?

That error code means there is an error loading a dll, so I'm guessing something is blocking it.

Is there any other security software on the machine?

Are you reasonably sure you are not already infected?

Is this a consumer version of AVG 9 or business?

If this is a business machine, please send an email to corporate-support@malwarebytes.org

Note that all corporate support inquiries require an order number.

Only AVG9 (consumer) and MBAM(paid-consumer) versions are installed ,windows firewall is turned off. No Other virus software is present, ran AVG scans a and also online version of ESET scan (online) and no viruses were found. To rule out conflicts due to AVG, i actually uninstalled AVG9 rebooted, reinstalled MBAM and still got the same error. Also opened a support ticket (#79333) and followed instructions given by MBAM support as well.
