McAfee / Malwarebyte slowing down system

Thank you btw for all the help on my last post - I found out that my wife disabled McAfee on purpose which leads me to my next post:

I'm a bit of a newbie so sorry if this is a dumb question. I have McAfee AntiVirus Plus installed along with MB and I must have something improperly configured because my system is in slow motion.

I notice that I keep getting a message from McAfee that the "Real-Time Scanning is Off". When I turn it on, the system bogs down again.

Is there a special way I should configure my McAfee or MB to play nice together?
