My laptop has been rendered useless

Recommended Posts

I clicked a google image link to get a wallpaper of that chick from The Prince of Persia. I didn't download anything, just went to the site. All the sudden my laptop was as slow as this computer I'm on now. So I opened up the task manager to see what was going on and tons of .exe files began opening and re-opening. I would constantly get an error message saying khvcol.exe has stopped working. If I would try and end the process it would just start again. Among the other strange files were lsass.exe, svchost.exe and a bunch more random letter exe files all running from temp files with the exception of lsass and svchost which were running from system32. Soon after my laptop overheated and shut down. So I rebooted in safemode and deleted all my temp files. So I ran malwarebytes and it came up with the svchost.exe, lsass.exe as well as a couple other Hijacker named trojans. It says that it has successfully removed them and must restart, so I'm thinking awesome, it will restart and I will be fine. NO, as soon as I leave safemode and run normally it starts up svchost.exe which takes up 99% of my cpu usage and then all of the sudden lsass.exe is back along with the others it will start like 50 new processes, including iexplorer, iexplora, lsass, svchost, hfr, hrg, sdwq, and a bunch of other .exe's that never popped up before. It will then overheat my laptop or it will shut windows down.

So I tried to delete lsass and svchost from system32 as they are the ones that pop up first and then slowly start bringing more processes up, so I assume they are some sort of parent programs. But since I'm using vista it will not let me delete them from system32 and it won't let me change the permissions for system32. I ran malwarebytes repeatedly and it will say it has successfully removed them, but it never actually does. So I can't directly delete these files and malwarebytes does not get rid of them. What else can I do? I can't use the computer for more than 1 minute out of safemode and am not able to download anything because I have no internet in safemode.

Your database version and version of MBAM are so old.

Step 1

Temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and other security software while installing and running.

  • Click on Start and select Control Panel
  • Open Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here
    • Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version
    • Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or post to ask and we'll explain how to do it.

Step 2

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Go to "Update" tab and select "Check for Updates". If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Go to "Scanner" tab and select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

In your next reply, please include these log(s) in this sequence:

  1. MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware log
  2. a new fresh DDS log with Attach.txt
  3. a new fresh GMER log

**Note: If you need more detailed information, please visit the web page of ComboFix in BleepingComputer. **

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper.

Please download ComboFix from

Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Open Tools -> Options -> Main tab
    • Set to Always ask me where to Save the files.

[*]During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

CF_download_FF.gif

CF_download_rename.gif

[*]It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.

[*]Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

[*]Close any open browsers.

[*]Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

-----------------------------------------------------------

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[*]Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it will produce a report for you.

[*]Please post the C:\Combo-Fix.txt for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

I had a couple problems, first after disabling Norton it continued to say it was running, also something with the name password collection configuration started installing, this only came up after running ComboFix. Also this was the only thing it created and it is called log.txt not combo-fix.txt

The original issue I was having is gone but now every time I restart a self install program begins running called password collector or something like that so I cancel it before it installs all the way, then it will try and install 2 more times and if I cancel it both those times it doesn't come back until I restart again.
