Residual problems from partially removed "Data Protection"

Recommended Posts

My computer was/is infected with Data Protection. In addition to the fake security programs that appeared (Data Protection and Windows Security Center) I have had problems with my internet connection, accessing task manager, running programs including Malwarebytes, disappearance of the Windows XP theme replaced by Windows classic theme, and so on.

After getting some help on another website I have succeeded in removing many of the bad registry keys and values, and Data Protection has not initialized since (doesn't bring up its splash screen when Windows opens, doesn't re-alter registry and doesn't drop trojans and other files onto my desktop anymore).

HOWEVER, there are still three main problems (there might be others)

- Windows XP display theme gone, can't revert to it

- Malwarebytes goes all the way through scan but then terminates at the end so I can't eliminate any of the threats

And, most importantly:

- Internet connection isn't working...and since I can't seem to locate my properly functioning flash drive at the moment, only the lame one, this is obviously really handcuffing my efforts to fix the problems.

I know the likeliest explanation for all three of these problems and any additional ones I may be aware of is registry edits...any ideas what keys I should look for? Or other advice? Thanks very much
