Settings getting Changed

I know something is wrong with this computer. The screens have changed. It started with pop-ups saying my security settings weren't right. I ignored the prompts. I try to change the settings back under my internet options, but it doesn't stick. I noticed too that in Malwarebytes - the protection setting. It won't stay clicked either. I run and run and run Malwarebytes but it keeps returning no EVIL files detected. I think its wrong. I know something is in there worming its way around and trying to steal all my fancy passwords. I just don't know what else to do. Oh yeah, I did a system restore. no good. I think I was already infected. The restore point won't go back more than a day. My printer doesn't work either. Saying the computer is as slow as Christmas is an understatement. I'm running WindowsXP and pulling my hair out at alarming rates. I have tried to read all the forums and figure out what to do. Nothing has worked so far. I ran that HighJack This program. It found some stuff. I thought, "Awesome! I'll just select all this stuff and all will be well!". Not hardly. The message that popped up said - don't do that unless you know exactly what you're doing. Of course I don't, so I didn't remove or fix anything! If anybody feels they can help, I will try anything and be greatful for your efforts and time.
