I got an Inaccessible boot device error after running combofix on a win2000 system. Combofix had reported that comres.dll was infected.

I tried a 'repair' install but I keep getting the same blue screen.

I've read on some forums that you need to run sfc or chkdsk /f but I can't get any sort of dos prompt from the win2000 cd or diskettes.

Any suggestions?

Hello topspin,

First, please do not use ComboFix on your own without the guidence of malware frighters/experts. The tool is so powerful that it may cause system failure if used improperly. You can get a better understanding why I said so in this post at bleeping computer:

I would like to ask why did you use Combofix? Are you trying to clean the malware from your system? If so, then please follow the advice below -

As we don't work on Malware removal or diagnostics in the general forums, please follow the directions below.

Alternatively, as a paying customer, you can contact the help desk at support@malwarebytes.org.

You can have a try by using the recovery console. You can read how to use it in the following Microsoft article:

Please post back if you have further questions.

Thank You :)

Edit - Adding recovery console information.

I am a computer technician and have worked extensively in cleaning up pc's from viruses and malware. One of the tools I've often used is combofix. I've never had an issue with it until running on it on my own win2000 system. The system did have a dns hijack, which prompted me to run more scans in case there were other infections. It was likely not necessary to run.
