Last night I clicked on a link and got some sort of fake anti-spyware program that won't allow me to run Malwarebytes or any other anti-virus, anti-spyware program.

I was using my preferred browser, FireFox, and Internet Explorer launched itself and started running a program called Antispyware. It's got a light green background and has put a cursor in the system tray that's green with a check-mark in it. Every few minutes a window pops up saying Windows Security Alert, and states that this computer is infected and Windows suggests doing a full scan now........then it scans and at the end of the scan says that I must purchase the full version of the software to remove the virus.

I've tried running my anti-virus - Avira, Malwarebytes, Panda Scan, and Spybot Search and Destroy and each time I click on any of them I get a message that "this program cannot be executed as it's infected." I tried to go to "add and remove" programs on my computer and get the same message.

What can I do to get rid of this virus?

Leila:

I just got hit with this the other day. I have the paid version with realtime protection enabled, but had website blocking disabled, and Avast antivirus running, but is still got through.

I got rid of it in XP by restarting the computer in Safe Mode, did a System Restore, deleted all prior Restore points, then updated Malwarebytes, and did scans with Malwarebytes and the antivirus programs.

Malwarebytes did not detect anything on the scan, but Avast did.

Everything is gone now. I am not sure Malwarebytes has fully addressed this one.
