First Real Virus

I don't how, from where or why, but I ended up with this irritating "XP Antimalware" thing on my computer that would throw up pop-ups, take me out of screens I was viewing and even restrict me getting on line.

Things went from bad to worse when I bought and downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.45 though. It downloaded just fine but when I went to run it, I got an error message- it gives me the C drive path where it is located and below says "application not found." I did a little digging around and there are several things that aren't working properly. The Firefox icon on the bottom left of my screen has always needed to just be tapped to open it. Now I have to "select a program" to open it with. And I definitely cannot run any .exe files

I went into C:\My Documents\Downloads and can see all of this stuff that I've downloaded, but when I click on the program I'm given a menu of programs to choose from. I should have to choose a program when it comes to .exe files!

Can someone give me a place to start?

Thanks!
