Windows blocks Malwarebytes at start up

Recommended Posts

I recently scanned by computer with Malwarebytes, and it came up with an ave.exe infection which needed to be rebooted to remove. But when I rebooted, Windows blocked Malwarebytes from starting up and so I wasn't able to remove the malware. I have the latest version of the program (which is 1.45, I believe).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome missbrokensmile -

Please Re-install the program with the instructions below - It may have been corrupted by that infection -

As you do not list your O/S please select the one that suits your System -

To Fully Remove and Reinstall a Fresh New Copy of Malwarebytes - Read Carefully

Windows XP:

  • Click on Start and select Control Panel
  • Open Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important !
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here

It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so, very important

After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here

Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version only -

Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.

Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask me and I'll explain how to do it.

Thank for the response, however, that did not work either.

Just to let you know, I have:

- 32-bit Windows Vista

- Free version of Malwarebytes

This is what I've done to try and get it to work

- rkill to stop malware processes, but that did not work

- Adding Malwarebytes to msconfig, allowing it to boot when the computer is started, but that didn't work

- Adding it to my anti-virus/firewall exceptions --> but it didn't work

- Changing the permissions of the file to me from "read & execute" to "full control"

- Using mbam-clean.exe and reinstalling

Any other ideas?
