Malwarebytes won't open after install

I'm pretty sure I have a virus/malware on a computer. It is windows xp professional with norton antivirus. I have downloaded and installed Malwarebytes (great program!) but when I try to run it, it doesn't ever open. I have downloaded and run Superantispyware, Rkill, exehelper and have uninstalled Malwarebytes several times, ran mbam-clean, reinstalled, and still can't get it to open. When I have uninstalled and used mbam-clean, it tries to update after a fresh reinstall but halfway through there is an error message and it closes. I have tried renaming mbam.exe, made a copy of it and renamed, and still nothing works. The browser has hijacked a few times but it doens't do it everytiime. I am really at a loss as to what to do next or what virus/malware is actually infecting the computer. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I forgot to add this to my original post and couldn't figure out how to edit it. I have tried all of this in both safe mode and the regular mode and I have disabled norton protection while reinstalling and trying to get it to update.
