if i had vista 64 bit installed and wanted to switch to 32 bit would i be able to do that and not do a reinstall? i know that if you upgrade to windows 7 you dont need to do a reinstall but is this the same for going to 64 bit to 32 bit and reverse?

No, they are completely separate versions, you can't just switch from Vista 64 to Vista 32 on the fly, it would require reformatting and reinstalling Windows using the 64 bit Vista disc if you have one, and you would also need a second key because once Windows is activated for 32 or 64, you cannot install the other version.

The same applies to Windows 7, you cannot upgrade from Vista 32 to 7 64 or Vista 64 to 7 32, but I will say that right now, and going forward, that 7 64 is and will be the most commonly installed version.
