Proper use of Malwarebytes

Recommended Posts

I somehow downloaded a rootkit and have been having problems since mid March. The good folks at PCHelp have been guiding me through this.

I have been using Malwarebytes as my active virus protection.

When the thing first hit me. 3/20

I couldn't update malwarebytes

I couldn't update the fixit virus patterns (Sunbelts VIPER) Enabled only when I needed to.

Unistall had been run on the Paratologic folder.

I ran Malware bytes and four Rogue.SysClean files were quarentined - all were found in the same restore point

after many fixes 4/5 I upgraded Malwearbyte to 1.45 with the new database and it found a Rootkit agent in the same restore point

The next day WORD and EXCEL would not open. The office folder was empty. Last night I read your "what do I do now" post. Kimsland pointed me to a thread in your forum. Since much of what was in there had been tried already I downloaded Avira. That found

C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-854245398-1715567821-682003330-1004\Dc2\Fix-It\VSS5C4BF.000

[DETECTION] Is the TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen Trojan

How does Malwarebytes differ from Aviara in finding bad files and protecting my computer?

Thank you. I am cleaned up enough to run the income tax software and I MUST do that. I will probably be back asking for more help.

dolmanpete,

I'd be pretty concerned using a machine that may or may not be fully clean from this rootkit and who knows what else to return taxes and also do anything else that requires transmission/entering of sensitive data. Is there another machine that is known to be clean that you might be able to use?
