Serious Computer Issues - Vundo? Others?

This has been a long process but I originally ran Avast! virus scanning and used Malwarebytes to double check things every now and then on my Windows XP SP3 Laptop. About a week ago Avast! notified me that I had Vundo.HU or something to that effect. I had Avast! quarantine it but then it continued to return. I had it do a boot scan where it again removed these files and then ran Malwarebytes and removed a number of infected files. It was silent for about a week before Avast! reported the same issues. At this point Malwarebytes wouldn't run and I couldn't update it but eventually I could get it going again by using it in safe mode.

Unfortunately, I now have much more serious issues. At some point yesterday I started getting "scanned" by XP Defender which I found to be part of a virus. Again I booted in safemode and ran Malwarebytes and removed the infected files. This did nothing as it keeps coming back and has gotten much worse. I downloaded hitman Pro 3.5 and scanned and it found no infections. As I tried to follow the instructions on this website I downloaded HiJackThis and Avira but now I cannot run .exe files without getting the windows prompt "which program do you want to use to open this file" and the running HiJackThis.msi results in a message saying the administrator has disabled installing this, or something to that effect. I feel like I am watching my computer melt and would appreciate some assistance regarding what my next move should be and how I can cure this infection.

Much appreciated,

James
