Asus laptup won't boot normally

Recommended Posts

This is a problem with my daughter's laptop. I'm not sure if this is a hardware problem or due to the fact that she has (or had, at least) lots of malware on it.

I have been able to boot into Safe Mode with Networking and have run Trend Micro HOusecall and MBAM. The machine would still not boot up normally so I have run defogger, dds and the gmer rootkit scanner.

I have attached a zip file with attach and ark. See below for mbam and ddds logs.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello audesue! Welcome to MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware Forums!

My name is Borislav and I will be glad to help you solve your problems with malware. Before we begin, please note the following:

  • The process of cleaning your system may take some time, so please be patient.
  • Stay with the topic until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
  • Instructions that I give are for your system only!
  • If you don't know or can't understand something please ask.
  • Do not install any software or hardware, while work on.

Step 1:

Please uninstall the following applications:

Adobe Reader 8.1.5 - Franзais

LimeWire 4.18.3

After finish our work, please download and install the latest verison of Adobe Reader from:

http://www.adobe.com

LimeWire is a p2p sharing program and it's against our policy.

Step 2:

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply
Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.
    C:\Program Files\Java
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java
    C:\Windows\Sun
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

Step 3:

Go into C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and you will see a file called mbam.exe Right click on it and drop down to Rename change the name to firefox.com From mbam.exe to firefox.com . Please, restart your computer.

Step 4:

Your dabase version is 3962 , but the current is 3974 (at this moment), so please update it.

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Go to "Update" tab and select "Check for Updates". If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Go to "Scanner" tab and select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

* JavaRa log

* MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware log

* DDS log only

Hi Borislav,

I have removed Limewire (not for the first time, but she's now promised to stop using these sort of programs).

I could not uninstall Adobe Reader or Java from Add/Remove programs as I get the message "Impossible d'acc

Believe me this is for your sake, this is because the p2p sharing programs are among the main sources of malware.

I know, that's why I've removed it before but she kept putting it back - but now she says she won't use it or similar p2p stuff again.

MBAM did not find any threats. MBAM log below. DDS in next post

**Note: If you need more detailed information, please visit the web page of ComboFix in BleepingComputer. **

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper.

Please download ComboFix from

Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Open Tools -> Options -> Main tab
    • Set to Always ask me where to Save the files.

[*]During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

CF_download_FF.gif

CF_download_rename.gif

[*]It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.

[*]Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

[*]Close any open browsers.

[*]Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

-----------------------------------------------------------

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[*]Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it will produce a report for you.

[*]Please post the C:\Combo-Fix.txt for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

ComboFix says I have the antivirus Sunbelt VIPRE running, but I can't seem to disable it in Safe Mode. I even tried using the Task Manager and terminating the process SBAMSvc.exe but ComboFix says it's still running. Shall I try letting ComboFix run anyway?

So bad! This problem is not due to the fact that you stopped the service of VIPRE. Let's try with Rescue CD.

Please try downloading and burning the following from another computer.

Avira AntiVir Rescue System

Requires access to a working computer with a CD/DVD burner to create a bootable CD.

  • Download the
    Avira AntiVir Rescue System
    from

  • Place a blank CD in your burner and double-click on the downloaded file named
    rescue_system-common-en.exe

  • The program will automatically burn the CD for you.

  • Place the burned CD into the affected computer and start the computer from this CD.

  • On the bottom left side of the screen there are 2 flags. Using your mouse click on the British flag to use English.

  • Click on the
    Configuration
    button.

    • Select
      Scan all files

    • Select
      Try to repair infected files
      and
Rename files, if they cannot be removed

    • Select
      Scan for dialers

    • Select
      Scan for joke programs (Jokes)

    • Select
      Scan for games

    • Select
      Scan for spyware (SPR)

    [*]
    Click on
    Virus scanner

    [*]
    Click on
    Start scanner
at the bottom of the screen

    [*]
Currently the program does not support saving a log. Write down the amount of items for Records, Suspect files, and Warnings

The Avira AntiVir Rescue System is a Linux-based application that allows accessing computers that cannot be booted anymore and is updated several times a day so that the most recent security updates are always available.

Possible solutions to Screen Resolution and other issues

  1. Please see the post
if you're unable to view the entire screen of Avira.

  2. You can also review this one

  3. Currently only the German keyboard is supported.
    English keyboards require work arounds.

  4. Some computers attempt to mount the floppy even though they don't have one. You may need to go in to the BIOS and disable the floppy drive in order to mount your hard drive for scanning.

I couldn't find a CD-R which didn't have files on it already, so tried to boot up again.

Got to the boot menu and chose directory services restore mode (I think that's what it's called - different in French) which did some repairs, then I managed to boot into safe mode with command prompt and ran ComboFix (but without certain options).

The system then automatically rebooted pretty normally, but I don't know my daughter's password and I wasn't given the option of Administrator (like in SafeMode with Networking) so logged in as a guest where ComboFix finished, but access was refused for something. I also couldn't get into Networking as a guest.

I'll get hold of my daughter's password for anything else that needs doing.

ComboFix log:

ComboFix 10-04-10.02 - Administrateur 11/04/2010 16:26:23.2.2 - FAT32x86 MINIMAL

Microsoft Windows XP

I have bad news! :o

Your system is seriously infected. Infected are very important system files such as atapi.sys ; beep.sys ; tcpip.sys and so on. ComboFix tried to find copies of these files to be replaced and to save your system, but all founded files are modified too. In this case, we recommend our users to do backup of their personal information and to make full formatting.

I'm so sorry! :)

Ah, we were worried that it might be a case of having to do that.

In fact, the first thing we were going to do was an operating system recovery, as I already have a backup of her important files. Usually on an Asus machine you press F9 to get to system recovery - I had to do this last year when there was another fault - that turned out to be overheating due to a hardware problem and it was repaired under guarantee.

When I tried F9 this time it didn't work. She does not have a recovery CD as one didn't come with the machine, but there is a recovery partition (Drive F:) - can I do anything with this?
