:) All of a sudden my laptop won't complete a Malwarebytes deep scan. It reboots about 30-45 minutes into the scan. I have done a quick scan and had 2 items which I removed. The log file is attached as is a Hijack this file.

I have uninstalled the Malwarebytes program using REVO Uninstaller, cleaned the registry using Eusing Free Reg Cleaner, defragged the hard disk with Defraggler, rebooted twice and then reinstalled the latest version of Malwarebytes Free. I ran a new scan and I still have the same problem. Then I ran the quick scan which was able to complete

I am running Vista with the latest security patches and service packs on an Acer spire 7720 laptop with 2 gb RAM, 250 gb HDD, Intel Core 2 Duo processor at 1.5 Ghz.

Other software installed is AVG 9.0 Free antivirus, Ad-Aware Free, Comodo Firewall Free, Spyware Terminator with realtime protection. I disable Syware Terminator, Comodo Firewall and AdAware when I run the scan and disable AVG 9 Resident Shield protection. Other programs installed include IObit Security 360, IObit Advanced System Care Pro, Spybot, Spywareblaster, A-Squared Free and Super AntiSpyware but all of these are on-demand and do not have the realtime protection enabled so they are NOT running in the background.

Any suggestions?

THANKS in advance!!!!

Hello 1steven! Welcome to MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware Forums!

My name is Borislav and I will be glad to help you solve your problems with malware. Before we

begin, please note the following:

  • The process of cleaning your system may take some time, so please be patient.
  • Stay with the topic until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
  • Instructions that I give are for your system only!
  • If you don't know or can't understand something please ask.
  • Do not install any software or hardware, while work on.

I have uninstalled the Malwarebytes program using REVO Uninstaller, cleaned the registry using Eusing Free Reg Cleaner

There is a standard approach in which uninstall MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware. For this purpose needs to be uninstalled through Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs (XP) / Uninstall program (Vista/7). To clean the residue used specifically created by Malwarebytes Staff tool, called mbam-clean.exe

Furthermore, we do not recommend registry cleaners. Here's why:

http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/02/reg...weaking_13.html

Step 1:

  • Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager
  • Click Save List (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Step 2:

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:

  • Main Mirror
    This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
    This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.

  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.
    gmer_zip.gif
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.

-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

Step 3:

Please visit Combofix Guide & Instructions for instructions for installing the recovery console and downloading and running ComboFix.

The only thing different from the instructions there is that when downloading and saving the ComboFix.exe I would like you to rename it to Combo-Fix.exe please.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that along with a new HijackThis log.

Important notes regarding ComboFix:

ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser. This can easily be changed once we're finished.

ComboFix also prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you, please let me know. This can be undone manually when we're finished. Read HERE for an article written by dvk01 on why we disable autoruns.

Note: During this process, it would help a great deal and be very much appreciated if you would refrain from installing any new software or hardware on this machine, unless absolutely necessary, until the clean up process is finished as it makes our job more tedious, with additional new files that may have to be researched, which is very time consuming.

Also, please do not run any security programs or fixes on your own as doing so may compromise what we will be doing. It is important that you wait for instructions.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

* HijackThis Uninstall List

* HijackThis log (new)

* GMER log

* ComboFix log

Hi and thanks for the suggestions. I have uninstalled using Malwarebyte's built-in uninstaller as I got an error message using control panel's add and delete programs saying it couldn't access Malwarebytes. Then I rebooted twice.

I ran Gmer nad HiJack this again per your instructions after shutting down all the antivirus, antispyware, anti malware, and firewall, which ran fine.

Then I downloaded and renamed and tried to run Combo-Fix.exe and I got error messages saying incorrectly that it still found Norton Anti-virus and Norton Anti-Spyware, Spyware Terminator and Spyware Blaster still running real time protection. This is not correct as I disabled them in msconfig from starting up. Plus I uninstalled Norton when I first got the pc 2 years ago because it was a resource hog. I clicked on OK twice to continue to run ComboFix and it starts but then it gets to the screen saying it has found a CD emulator that needs to be shut down and I click OK and then the PC reboots by itslef. This also happened when I tried the same procedure in safe mode. So I'm stuck.

Here are the logs I was able to get from Gmer and a new HiJack This uninstall log (just before trying to run ComboFix).

huh, okey, step-by-step . Now:

Please, download OTL (by OldTimer) and save it on your Desktop.

Double-click on OTL.exe, to run the program.

Check in:

  • Scan all users
  • Lop check
  • Purity check

Under section Extra Registry, select Use SafeList

Click on Run Scan and let it finish scanning. (it may take 10-15 minutes)

When finished, post the following two log files:

  • OTL.txt (located on your desktop)
  • Extras.txt (will open automatically)
