Does real-time protection obviate need for on-demand scans?

Recommended Posts

Greetings Ian and welcome to Malwarebytes :)

The realtime protection components in the Pro version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware are essentially to prevent malware from getting into your system, both by blocking malicious processes from executing in memory and by blocking known malicious IP addresses.

That does not prevent existing malware on your system unless it executes a process in memory, and even then, will only allow you to remove the executable when it is detected. It will not reverse any damage done to system settings, the registry, and will not remove any files and folders that belong to an existing infection on your system. That's where the scans come into play.

It is a good idea, if you are a heavy web surfer, to do a Quick Scan once a week. If you don't use the web that much, then once every two weeks to a month should be fine. This will ensure that nothing slipped through and infected you before MBAM was updated to detect and block the threat.

I hope I've sufficiently answered your question. If you require anything further please post or contact support@malwarebytes.org

Thanks :)
