Malwarebytes' fails to load control

Hello, I need help and I am new here. I suspect there is malware on a computer running Windows XP SP3 but am not sure. I installed Malwarebytes' free version after downloading it from another computer. I get "Run-time error '372': Failed to load control 'vbalGrid' from vbalsgrid6.ocx. Your version of vbalsgrid6.ocx may be outdated. Make sure you are using the version of the control that was provided with your application."

The computer will not open Internet Explorer although I am seeing an iexplore.exe instance in task manager each time I try to execute it. I also have no Start Menu or System Tray showing. This computer did have a valid license to Trend Micro PcCillin (sorry if I misspelled) that expires tomorrow but I uninstalled it and installed Symantec Corporate edition on an extra license. I recall seeing a warning about registry changes from Symantec and on reboot started having the other problems. I then was told this computer has been having problems with the internet crashing and only starting back up on total reboot.

I also ran a Windows XPS check to be sure what version is on this computer and the report says at least 8 files are missing and there are a total of 47 unknown files.

I am kind of stuck. I also downloaded and ran RootRepeal and it identified 2 files, not sure that either are anything to worry about and as well as Hijackthis, so I can run logs.

Hopefully I am in the right thread to start since I cannot run the basic Malwarebytes' software to start.

I think I am going to just go with a full reinstall. I have working on this too long now, going on nine hours...probably should have posted earlier for help...

I have not yet reinstalled, turns out there are files on here I need to try and save so if there is anyone out there who can help, I would appreciate it very much.

I am also not able copy files off of the computer nor am I able to search for files in Windows Explorer other than by manually opening files or by entering a direct file string. Finally it booted in safe mode but I have not been able to get that to happen a second time. It appears an administrator account has been created because when I tried to do an XP recovery it asked for a password which has never been set and in safe mode, it showed an admin account and the user account (also admin).
