Internet Explorer can't open

Recommended Posts

Hello Folks,

Ever since I got rid of the Antivirus Soft malware using Malwarebytes anti-malware, I am unable to open Internet Explorer on my computer. When I try to run a diagnostic, it tells me that it cannot connect to HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP. The Network Diagnostic tool tells me to check HTTP port 80, HTTPS port 443, and FTP port 21 on my firewall.

I know I didn't change any of this, and it's not a huge deal since I can use Firefox. However, I am unable to connect to Steam because it seems they go through Internet Explorer. If you guys have clues or work-arounds, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

-Hi F/N - I think I gave you the link to repair that , so now try this -

For XP click on Start Run and copy or cut and paste in run box and click OK -

CMD /C ECHO Y|CHKDSK C: /R | SHUTDOWN /R /T 30

First run DiskChech - Runs for about 30mins , then I will post a code to check I.E. -

Thank You - :P

To reactivate Internet Explorer repeat the above process once the check is finished with this code -

REG ADD "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v GlobalUserOffline /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Let me know if it makes any improvement -

If there is no improvement you may need an expert to check if there is any of that infection still causing the problems - Follow these instructions -

Please print out, read, and follow the directions here, skipping any steps you are unable to complete. Then post a NEW topic here.

One of the expert helpers there will give you one-on-one assistance when one becomes available.

After posting your new post make sure under options that you select Track this topic and choose one of the Email options so that you're alerted when someone has replied to your post.

Thanks - :)

Hello noknojon,

I ran Diskcheck using the code you gave me. It ran for about 30 min as you said, and it said there were no errors on my disk. Then, I ran the second code you gave me above, and nothing seemed to happen. Internet Explorer still cannot open and when I run the diagnostic within IE, it gave me the same message.

Should I wait for another code from you to check I.E., or should I proceed to create a new topic?

mylanta3,

The version of IE I have is 6.0.2900.5512. I am running Windows XP.

Thank you!

Please try the following.

As long as it is NOT due to current live Malware preventing it this may help. Is the issue that IE won't launch or it won't connect.

Disable Internet Explorer Proxy Settings and Reset TCP/IP

It is very important that these steps be carried out exactly as shown otherwise the fix will not work.

If you have any questions please ask before moving on.

  • Please start Notepad and using your mouse make sure you select and copy all the information below in the Code box into your new document.
  • Then save the file as "fixme.bat" to your Desktop
  • In the drop down box for Save as type: make sure you select All Files (*.*) and keep the quotes on the name as well. Then close the new file.
    @ECHO OFF
    reg delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyServer /f
    reg delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyOverride /f
    reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyEnable /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
    reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v GlobalUserOffline /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
    netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

  • On Windows XP you can double-click the file to run it.
  • On Vista/Win7 you need to Right click the file and choose Run as administrator to run it. With User Account Control on it should ask permission to run it. Click Yes
  • This will flash a black DOS box very quickly and go away, this is normal.
  • Restart your computer now.
  • Launch Internet Explorer and see if you can connect to the Internet.
  • Launch MBAM and check for Updates
