Please try this on the computer that is having an issue.

1. Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware using Add/Remove programs in the control panel.

2. Restart your computer (very important).

3. Download and run this utility. mbam-clean.exe

4. It will ask to restart your computer (please allow it to).

5. After the computer restarts, install the latest version from here. mbam-setup.exe

Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent

Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.

Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray and that you can run a quick scan and all is working as expected.

Thanks. I did everything above and got the same error when I reinstalled. What should I do now?

I just repeated everything and got the same error for the 3rd time. What else can I try?

Thanks.

Could the reason be viral activity in my bios? I had to reconstruct the master boot record and fdisk the hard disk before I could reinstall windows 2k; regular high formatting wasn't enough after a boot virus attack.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT (From Forum Moderator) -

Depending on your operating system there are two fixes:

Windows 2000- You must install SP4 and all accompanying updates.

For Windows XP- The Cryptographic service needs to be repaired. There is a special tool for this called Dial-a-Fix:

From here

Extract the files inside the folder to it's own folder on your C drive

Then run the program.

When it opens, allow the program to remove any policy restrictions if it finds any.

Next Select the 'options' to fix Windows Update.

When those options have been selected hit the 'Go' button and let Dial a Fix run. After its finished running close Dial a Fix, reboot the computer.

I did try to install SP4 from a CD. It never required downloads before. This time, however, it required massive downloading. There were many interruptions until my internet access stopped; I had to reboot repeatedly to restore internet access. As a result, I never completed the download. Could this unusual behavior be a sign of malware activity?

Thanks.

When you run Dial up (I suspect this was one of your problems) the updates can time out prior to always being completed - Not a problem -

This was a problem with many early updates that never fully installed - Now we can fully update quicker and complete the items we missed -

Glad you followed the advice - Please post back if you have other problems - :P

I did not run Dial a Fix because I didn't install Win XP on this hard disk. I was trying to add the complete SP4 from a CD to my Win 2000 Pro.

Would the diagnosis be easier if I install XP and add SP3?

Thanks.

Your issues are way beyond the scope of the General Forum.

Step 1 - you must ensure that your PC is cleared of any Malware.

Step 2 - then you can seek more detailed assistance in the PC Help forum if Malware detection and removal comes back clean and you're still having an issue general in nature.
