Microsoft IE 8 problems

I have begun to notice a problem with MSIE 8 and I don't know if it is IE8 or something else.

There have been several instances when I click on a link on a web page or in my web mail (Hotmail) and I do not get a response at all.

The only way I can go to the website associated with the link is to copy the link, open a new tab or a new window,

past the copied link into the new address bar and press enter.

Then I can navigate normally until it happens again in the new window.

I have run MBAM, Threatfire, SAS Pro (64 bit), and AVG IS 9.0.

Everything comes up clean.

The PC is an Intel Core2 Quad system on Windows 7 Enterprise (x64) with all of the latest updates installed.
