Error 732 (2,0) System can't find file specified

Recommended Posts

I am unable to update MBAM, as per the topic -- MBAM reports (Error 732 (2,0) The system cannot find the file specified.

I am using WinXP Sp3. My version of MBAM is PRO/paid.

NOTE: It is annoying that I cannot search for prior replies concerning this error code -- because the forum's searcher rejects search words of less than 4 characters whereas "732" is only 3 characters. :(

Start by applying the tips in this note --> http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?s...st&p=162097
It didn't help, but thanks for trying.

The "tips" in your link refer to Internet Explorer & NetZero. I do not use either of those. I use Firefox & broadband.

Further, why would MBAM's updater, that has worked fine for several months, suddenly to cease to function whereas NO changes have been made to my computer set-up??

Also, the error reported isn't dealing with connectivity but with MBAM's inability to "find the file specified." WHAT file? Why can't it locate it? Why won't MBAM offer me the option to browse to whichever file it is suddenly unable to find, so I can help?

I bought a license for MBAM a few weeks ago. Now I have an licensed app that refuses to update & won't say "Why" in such as way as to enable me to resolve the problem.

I am hugely frustrated & disappointed! PLEASE HELP with something besides boilerplate. :(

For a 732 Error....

Step 1: Verify Internet Connectivity of Internet Explorer:

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please download ERUNT from here
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Double click on erunt-setup.exe to Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • Use the default install settings but say NO to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this option later if you wish.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup.
    • Note: the default location is C:\Windows\ERDNT which is acceptable.

[*]Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.

    [*]Click on OK

[*]Then click on YES to create the folder.

Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Once you've done your backup, please do the following:

  • Click on Start and select Run
  • In the Run box copy and paste the text in the following code box exactly as written and press Enter or click on OK:
    REG ADD "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v GlobalUserOffline /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

  • Try updating again and if it does not work then please proceed to Step 2

Step 2: Exclude Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware's Files and Folders From Other Active Security Programs:

For Windows XP:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

For Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\SysWoW64\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well

The FAQ contains examples of setting file exclusions for some known AV products.

Now try updating Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware once more and if it does not work then please proceed to Step 3

Step 3: Verify Your Internet Connection Settings:

  • Open Internet Explorer
    • Note: It MUST be Internet Explorer, not Firefox, Opera, Chrome or any other internet browser

[*]Click on Tools at the top and select Internet Options

    • Note: If you do not see Tools, press the Alt key on your keyboard and it will show up

    [*]Click on the Connections tab

[*]Click on the LAN settings button

[*]Under Automatic configuration make sure that the box next to Automatically detect settings is checked, if it is not, then click the box next to it to check it

[*]Under Proxy server make sure that the box next to Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections). is not checked and if it is, click the box next to it to uncheck it

[*]Click on the OK button to close the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window

[*]Click on the OK button to close the Internet Options window

[*]Try updating Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware again to see if it now works correctly

Step 1: Verify Internet Connectivity of Internet Explorer:

Thanks, but I have a comment before trying this stuff.

Namely, I don't even know the last time that I used or updated Internet Explorer. I have IE version 6 but it isn't set-up to connect out AT ALL. It never has been. It has ALWAYS been blocked on my computer.

So it seems futile to verify IE's connectivity when it has NEVER been connected -- and I have been updating MBAM successfully for quite a long time.

I will try what you say but first -- please explain: WHAT does IE's connectivity have to do with updating MBAM?? And why NOW, when I have never before had to deal with IE's connectivity (or lack of it) when updating MBAM in the past, for lo these many moons?

I do appreciate your help, & I do intend to cooperate -- but the sudden involvement of an unused browser (IE) is confusing me.

Aloha,

bellgamin

Thank you for your patience -

The progran Malwarebytes downloads in the same manner as Microsoft updates - By using Internet Explorer as its main distributor - If there was a program set up for downloading via all browsers that are available (dozens) then that would mean a Very large distribution center - If you do not have Internet explorer activated (preferably minimum I.E.7) then you can miss valuable Microsoft updates that are needed as well as not being able to update Malwarebytes - Many distributors use this method as it is the most common brpwser on the web -

Maurice and Firefox were trying to get you to activate I.E. , not deal with those other companies (which cause similar problems)

Thank you if you read this - :(

As to missing Microsoft patches -- I readily obtain all Microsoft updates without the use of IE. I get them from HERE & other such places.

As to not being able to update MBAM -- I have been updating MBAM without IE activated for ~2 years. I am struggling to understand why this has become an issue all of a sudden. Can someone explain? Further, can someone explain why this lack of IE is NOT an issue with any of my other software updates, of which I have well over 30?

I really meant my earlier comment when I said I DO want to cooperate, but not at the expense of activating or updating IE. If there is any other way for solving this issue, so that I can AGAIN update MBAM as I have been able to do in the past, I will readily give it a try. I repeat -- I have always been able to update MBAM -- without IE activated -- in the past. Not once but many many times. What has changed? Can it be fixed? Otherwise, I request a refund.

By the way, I note that Microsoft must now offer alternatives to IE to its European users of the Windows OS. In such case, won't MBAM choose to accommodate those users who elect not to use IE?

Mahalo & aloha,

Bellgamin

This is proposed to occur as the next version is almost ready and was slowed a bit by this process - You 'may' have always had a version of I.E. that was able to update and you may have had a 'minor' infection that altered your settings - This is not uncommon - That is why these FAQ items are available on our site - I hope you do activate I.E. or I can refer you to a supervisor that can oblige you with your wishes -

Thank You - :(

It worked. Goodness knows WHY it worked, but I suspect it is because I also threw salt over my left shoulder while the moon was full & the wolfbane was in bloom. :(

But seriously -- thanks for the help. This is a great forum.

Even so, I STILL do not understand why MBAM stopped updating after ~2 years of ~daily updates, all without incident. In the words of Yul Brenner, "It is a puzzlement". R.I.P. Yul

Not possible. IE is blocked from executing and from connecting out, both by Malware Defender (a full-scope, rule-based HIPS) & by Kerio 2.1.5 (FW).

...you may have had a 'minor' infection that altered your settings

Bite your tongue! No -- better yet, go to jail. Go directly to jail. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200. :(

How dare you impugn my beloved computer's chastity? Infections do NOT happen on my virginal computer. Noway. Nohow. No not never!!! Tondemonai, yo!

Well I am glad you issue is resolved.
Me too!

Many thanks to all who helped & encouraged me along the way. Especially (of course) noknojon.

I eagerly await 1.45.

May the sound of happy music,

And the lilt of friendly laughter,

Fill your heart with gladness,

That stays forever after.

@ bellgamin -

You did have I.E. set up on your system, but it was set to work OFF LINE - I re-checked the code and it altered the setting to "work on line " -

So the version of Internet Explorer was always there - Even though it was not fully enabled for on line work -

Thank You -

ALOHA

EDIT - At the top of this section you can click on "General Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Forum" and see a FAQ section that explains many of these subjects -

I never said otherwise. Please read my Post #5, quoted in part as follows:

I have IE version 6 but it isn't set-up to connect out AT ALL.

May you have warm words on a cold evening

A full moon on a dark night

And the road downhill all the way to your door.

Warm regards,
