Vista Antimalware 2010

Recommended Posts

First as a newbie, I would like to apologize if I'm not posting the appropriate info.

I'm not sure how it got onto my wife's computer, but she is getting a pop-up for "Vista Antimalware 2010". I'm pretty sure it is a rogue, but I did a search online and only saw postings on "Vista Antivirus 2010" and those variants. It has the same look and feel, so I'm assuming it is from the same source. It also seems like Malwarebytes seems to have discovered this and provided updated definitions.

However, I've tried to run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, but it has come up with nothing. I've also seen other postings in this forum for "XP Antimalware 2010" with the same results as me after running Malwarebytes.

Anything new?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello,

I got the exact same problem as Ken. Vista AntiMalware suddenly popped up today and I can't get rid of it nor can it be detected by Norton or Malewarebytes. I hope there is some other way to get rid of it.

Thanks for your help in advance!!

Here are the logs:

Thanks. Glad(?!?!) that someone else can report this as well. Here is my log per your comment. Please note that the "Vista Antimalware 2010" popup was not visible when I ran this log. The next time it happens, I will run it again with the popups visible.

Again, thanks for looking into this.

Best,

Ken

Hi both of you. This is extremely confusing if more than one is posting their log here - but I'll try to deal with both of the two cases in this thread.

For everyone else, please do not post your log here, but start a new thread instead, because there's no way I can handle several different cases in one thread.

Can you both do the following?

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.

  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

---------------------------------------------------

Copy and paste the contents of DDS.txt in your next reply. Do not copy and paste the contents of Attach.txt, but attach it to your reply instead.

Extra note, please run this scan when the popup is active!

Ok guys, I think I know what's going on here, but I really need a sample from your computer first.

If you're on Vista, I need the following sample: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\ave.exe

If you're on XP, I need it from here: C:\Documents and settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\ave.exe

Go to this page to upload the sample.

This so I can add detection to malwarebytes for this new variant. If everyone else is reading this and have this file, please upload it as well to above url. This so I can analyse and post instructions.

Thanks.

Hey sorry for confusing you and posting my logs here as well!

I can't find the ave.exe file, its not in Local folder and can't find it anywhere else either.

Here is the dds thing:

DDS (Ver_09-12-01.01) - NTFSx86

Run by Vanessa at 11:12:00.68 on 17/03/2010

Internet Explorer: 7.0.6001.18000

Hi,

It is though:

C:\Users\Vanessa\AppData\Local\ave.exe

In either way, I have already received the sample in a meanwhile and Malwarebytes will be updated to deal with this one.

However, it would be great if I can have your sample as well, this to verify this is still the same one (as this one updates frequently), so please search for it again.

While the update is not up yet, we can delete it manually afterwards.

Also,

Were you able to use malwarebytes? And did it detect anything? This because this variant Hijacks the exe file association and malwarebytes should have detected that part already. That's why it's important to know if your exe associations are already fixed or not.

Open malwarebytes, click the 'logs' tab and select the log from your previous scan where it did detect anything, because I need to see that one - just to make sure.

Once I have that log, then we can proceed with the manual cleanup.

Hello,

there really is no ave.exe file at that location and Start Search couldnt find it either. I attached a screenshot of that folder. :P Should I be concerned about that?

I just downloaded Malewarebytes yesterday and it hasn't detected anything (after it scanned for almost 6 hours). I always thought I was safe with Norton 360.

It must be hidden.

Go to the url I posted before and in the browse path, copy and paste this:

C:\Users\Vanessa\AppData\Local\ave.exe

Then select upload. We'll see if it can see it that way :P

It is there though, because it clearly shows in your DDS log.

For your malwarebytes, did you update before you scanned with it? What database version does it say? (you can see this under the update tab).

You don't need to do a full scan with malwarebytes - a quick scan is fine and more powerful.

Ok, malwarebytes has been updated to deal with this variant. It will detect it from database 3876 and up.

So, make sure you update malwarebytes before you run the scan. In case you are having problems with running Malwarebytes (since this variant hijacks the exe file association), rename the mbam.exe file present in the C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' anti-malware folder to mbam.com. Launch the mbam.com from there in order to launch malwarebytes.

Then, first of all, update malwarebytes via the update tab. In case it won't update, reboot into Windows safe mode WITH networking support and update and scan from there.

Okay, this IS tough.

I think I uploaded that file, but since it showed this, I'm not sure:

"Your file was successfully submitted. Please let the user helping you know that you have submitted the file.Query failed : MySQL server has gone away

We apologize for the temporary outage. The administrators are performing maintenance on the site and will be finished soon.

Please try again shortly.

You can try refreshing the page in a couple of minutes by clicking here."

Now do I need to do it again, or did it work? This is really confusing.

BUT I think, I finally got rid of Vista Antimaleware. I updated Malwarebytes, did the quick scan, and restarted laptop.

Thanks so much for your help!!

Hello,

I have two files on my desktop, but after upgrading to the latest defs, I still get "no malicious items detected". My PC does not have the infection, but I have copied the files from an infected PC to my desktop...I have also submitted the files via the link you provided.

Thanks

Hi,

Sorry, a little off with the time zone difference.

1) We haven't seen the pop-up in awhile. Seems like it has gone into hibernation. I will run the DDS when it comes back.

2) I tried to upload the ave.exe file as you have suggested, but just as Vanessa stated, it doesn't show up in the folder. I made sure that Windows is set to show any hidden files/folders, but I still don't see anything. In addition, I set it to hide and re-showing them, but no luck. I am currently logged into my wifes computer (her user name is also the admin). Should I try the other active username?

3) Per your suggestion, I have renamed Malwarebytes Anti-Malware .exe to 'mbam.com', ran Anti-Malware from there, and uploaded current db definitions 3876. I ran a quick and full scan, but found nothing.

THOUGHTS... Could it have a self-destruct or renaming (or move to a different username on the computer) feature to avoid detection if the popup hasn't been clicked in a certain time period?

Best,

Ken

Hi,

Just update and run malwarebytes again, because I added extra detection yesterday as well to deal with some leftovers :)

I renamed the file to mbam.com. I was able to launch the program but it won't let me update it. When I try too, it'll say that program will close and will install new updates. When I relaunch the program, it never updates.. Help please!

It looks like you are still having an older version.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

If you are unable to do this from the infected computer diurectly, transfer the file from another computer.

Download the mbam-setup.exe to your desktop.

Now make sure extensions are shown. To do this, please look here

Then rename the mbam-setup.exe: mbamsetupexe.png to mbam-setup.com: mbamsetupcom.png

Then launch mbam-setup.com in order to install Malwarebytes' Anti-malware

Once Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is installed, navigate to your Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder and locate the mbam.exe in there:

mbamexe.png

rename it to mbam.com:

mbamcom.png

Now doubleclick mbam.com to launch Malwarebytes' Anti-malware.

  • Click the "Update" tab and click the "Check For updates" button.
  • Once the program has loaded and updates were downloaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart, so please allow MBAM to restart.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

This should get rid of your problem as you see in the screenshot below:

mbammain.png

You will be prompted to reboot the computer. Once this has been done, please rename mbam.com back to mbam.exe.

You'll see that it will be able to run again.

Also, it may be better to start your own thread with your problem, because if everyone posts in this thread, it's extremely confusing for me and the original topicstarter.
