XP Antimalware 2010

Recommended Posts

Please help! Yesterday I got the fake XP Internet Security on my PC and had to find a way to get rid of it. While googling, I found Malwarebytes. However, XP wouldn't let me install it because of the Malware (av.exe, I could end it from the task manager but clicking anything wouldn't work). Hijack this showed nothing wrong with it, and scanning with AVG (I managed to right click and hit "scan this" to open it up) showed three trojans which I deleted. It didn't do anything.

I then read that renaming the installer file might trigger the installation of Malwarebytes. I tried, but it didn't work. I then changed the .exe to .com and it worked, I installed it, updated and ran a quick scan. It came up with 6 objects and I cleaned them out, disabled system restore and rebooted the computer as specified. It didn't do anything. The program was still there. So then I repeated the process of installing Malwarebytes again and did a full scan this time. I got 60 something results (many of which I didn't believe were legit infected, some were Printer Drivers etc) and deleted all of them anyway. I rebooted and it worked, there was nothing popping up. This was early in the morning now.

Throughout the day I used my PC normally and didn't find any problems with it. I didn't get anything telling me I had something wrong. I could start up programs normally again. It seemed to be all over.

But then just now about 20 minutes ago it started again. This time it's "XP Antimalware 2010" or something like that and runs "ave.exe" instead of "av.exe" on the task manager. It has all the same program windows and comes up with the same bullcrap. I'm running a scan with Antimalware as I type this again but I'm worried that its not going to be effective again in the long run. Is there anything I can do to prevent it from coming back?

It seems to appear mainly during the nights.

Here is the thing from yesterday.

There are a couple other details I can mention:

1. It probably started a while ago when I was looking at a video where some guy was turning his N64 into a portable N64 (one of those hobby mod sites). I got a popup telling me I had viruses and I foolishly clicked "remove all unhealed infections" because it looked a lot like AVG (which I use). It kept giving me messages telling me I had viruses and I rebooted my computer and they ceased to appear. I took the advice of a friend and checked my startup processes to see if it had added any and from what I could tell it didn't.

2. My sister's laptop, which is using internet from my wireless router, contains some malware (her google searches are redirected). I don't know if that has anything to do with it and I seriously doubt it can spread over my internet but I'm no expert so I figured I'd mention it).

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hello JMM123! Welcome to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forums!

My name is Borislav and I will be glad to help you solve your problems with malware. Before we begin, please note the following:

  • The process of cleaning your system may take some time, so please be patient.
  • Stay with the topic until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
  • Instructions that I give are for your system only!
  • If you don't know or can't understand something please ask.
  • Do not install any software or hardware, while work on.

Step 1:

Please visit Combofix Guide & Instructions for instructions for installing the recovery console and downloading and running ComboFix.

The only thing different from the instructions there is that when downloading and saving the ComboFix.exe I would like you to rename it to Combo-Fix.exe please.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that along with a new HijackThis log.

Important notes regarding ComboFix:

ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser. This can easily be changed once we're finished.

ComboFix also prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you, please let me know. This can be undone manually when we're finished. Read HERE for an article written by dvk01 on why we disable autoruns.

Note: During this process, it would help a great deal and be very much appreciated if you would refrain from installing any new software or hardware on this machine, unless absolutely necessary, until the clean up process is finished as it makes our job more tedious, with additional new files that may have to be researched, which is very time consuming.

Also, please do not run any security programs or fixes on your own as doing so may compromise what we will be doing. It is important that you wait for instructions.

Step 2:

Also, I would like you to generate a "Add/Remove Software list" log using the HijackThis application. Here is how you can do this:

To get an Uninstall List from HijackThis:

  • Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
  • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

* HijackThis Uninstall List

* HijackThis log (new)

* ComboFix log

Thanks! :)

Step 1:

Please uninstall the following application:

Adobe Reader 8.1.4

After finish our work, please download and install the latest version of Adobe Reader from:

http://www.adobe.com

Step 2:

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply
    Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.
    C:\Program Files\Java
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java
    C:\Windows\Sun
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

Step 3:

Open Notepad and copy and paste the text in the code box below into it:

RenV::
c:\program files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\reader_sl .exe
c:\program files\AVG\AVG8\avgtray .exe
c:\program files\Common Files\Adobe\Updater5\adobeupdater .exe
c:\program files\Common Files\Ahead\Lib\nerocheck .exe
c:\program files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\applesyncnotifier .exe
c:\program files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\pdvdserv .exe
c:\program files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\Language\language .exe
c:\program files\HP\HP Software Update\hpwuschd2 .exe
c:\program files\iTunes\ituneshelper .exe
c:\program files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched .exe
c:\program files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam .exe
c:\program files\QuickTime\qttask .exe
c:\program files\Windows Live\Messenger\msnmsgr .exe
c:\windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\msconfig .exe

Save the file to your desktop and name it CFScript.txt

Then drag the CFScript.txt into the ComboFix.exe as shown in the screenshot below.

CFScriptB-4.gif

This will start ComboFix again. It may ask to reboot. Post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Note: These instructions and script were created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these instructions or use this script as it could damage the workings of your system.

Step 4:

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:

  • Main Mirror
    This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
    This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.

  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.
    gmer_zip.gif
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.

-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

* JavaRa

* HijackThis log (new)

* ComboFix log

* GMER log
