Is there anything wrong here?

Recommended Posts

Edited March 10, see end of this post.

I was avoiding posting to this part of the forum, since I don't want to waste anyone's time if there isn't a problem, and I'm not really sure there is. The only symptom of concern was that yesterday I just happened to see that by late afternoon, my desktop had received 196,054 packets since I started it up in the morning. This is highly abnormal. I mean, right now it's late evening and I'm at 38,000 packets. My normal for the day might be about 60,000 packets, roughly. I can't account for yesterday's high volume. I downloaded virus signature updates for MSE and MWB, and 3 personas for Firefox. I have been trying and trying to think of something that would explain such a volume, and I cannot. I don't have anything set to update automatically. I don't even have Windows set to check automatically, I always do it manually.

I'll post the logs I created yesterday, hope I did it right:

============= FINISH: 20:31:09.84 ===============

I only have the one log for GMER, which is zipped and attached. I just did a quick scan, since it didn't seem to find anything of note. If I misunderstood the instructions, please let me know. :)

There's one thing in that DDS scan that I am wondering about, that KGyGAavL.sys, but I've scanned it at Jotti and Virustotal, and they didn't find anything. It is a hidden file. I have to unhide critical operating system files in order to see it.

MWB isn't showing anything.

P.S. Edited to add that I did print a couple of web pages and a 9 page .pdf document from my laptop. One web page generated 10 pages of print, the other 8 pages. I saved the 10 pager to my laptop to see the file size and it was only about 300 kb. The pdf was 581 kb in size. I never could find a straight answer re converting bytes to packets and vise versa, but I did think the packet volume for yesterday was unusual all the same.

Edited March 10

I did my routine end-of-day scan with Superantispyware, and it said that it found that C:\Windows\I386\WINNT.exe was Trojan Dropper\Win-NV. I've scanned the file at virustotal and jotti. They don't show any infection. I checked the WINNT.exe on my laptop. It is identical to the file on the affected computer, according to virustotal and jotti. The only two differences lie in their dates and location. On the desktop (affected computer), the WINNT.exe creation and modification dates are August 9/04. On the laptop, the creation date is April 29/06 and the modification date is Aug 4/04. Also, the I386 folder on the laptop is in a different location. The path is C:\I386\WINNT.exe. The same version of Superantispyware says this version of WINNT.exe is clean. I've contacted Superantispyware about what is hopefully a false positive.
