Run-time error '481'

Recommended Posts

My computer has been battling malware infections for some time, and I've been all over the net seeking help.

I have malwarebytes installed, however, I cannot start up the program. When I attempt to run the executable, I get a 481 error message that says "Invalid picture".

I receive the same message when I try to run the installer to re-install it.

My computer is infected with Dr Guard and Internet Security Suite 2010, at the least. I downloaded the rkill program and ran it, and have not restarted my computer since doing so. These are the processes rkill deactivated.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe

C:\Documents and Settings\HK-47\Local Settings\Application Data\MSASCui.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\RUNDLL32.EXE

C:\DOCUME~1\HK-47\LOCALS~1\Temp\asr64_ldm.exe

C:\Program Files\Dr. Guard\drguard.exe

C:\Documents and Settings\HK-47\Desktop\rkill.com

I downloaded the alternate Malwarebytes .exe file hosted by bleepingcomputer.com, which uses a randomly generated name for the executable, but running that still encounters the same error.

Any suggestions?

I should also point out that I am using Microsoft XP Service Pack 3 as an operating system, and for protection have McAfee installed (but everybody is telling me it's crap) and the free version of Avast and SpyBot Search and Destroy (though not sure where I got that, I've had it forever) in addition to Malwarebytes free version.

Hi HK-47 -

All is not lost - I will post a possible fix in 3 mins and a direction to get our experts to fix if you prefer -

DrGuard removal instructions are here -

This can show how to remove I/S 2010 -

But since we don't work on detailed Malware removal or diagnostics in the general forums you may need to follow the directions listed here -

Please print out, read, and follow the directions here, skipping any steps you are unable to complete. Then post a NEW topic here.

One of the expert helpers there will give you one-on-one assistance when one becomes available.

After posting your new post make sure under options that you select Track this topic and choose one of the Email options so that you're alerted when someone has replied to your post.

AdvancedSetup (the boss) has put forward the fact that your multi infections may require expert attention - I also agree - :)

Thank you - :)

Yes, I just now found the removal instructions for DRGuard and the XP Security malware, and while the DrGuard instructions didn't help, the other one did, once I was able to figure it out, and it looks like Malwarebytes is scanning happily away now! :) I was just about to post an update heh.
