MKelly53270 Posted March 5, 2010 ID:209916 Share Posted March 5, 2010 Hello all and thanks in advance for any help you can provide me...About 6 weeks ago it appeared that I got a bad windows update causing Vista to lock up about 3-5 after booting. I was also getting occasional BSoD's, though they were random and didn't really seem to be related. Through Dell Support and deleting some potentially corrupted update files, we appeared to get that issue resolved. I then was able to get everything updated to the most recent windows update. Since then, the computer has been much quicker and more responsive, but still acting "fluky"... is that even a word? I am now unable to rename, move, delete files without the windows explorer window locking up. However, they will rename, move, or delete once I get it unfrozen. I am usually able to stop windows explorer in Task Manager and the computer goes back to functioning OK. I contacted Dell Support again and they told me they couldn't help me because I had a virus. I honestly hadn't really considered this as the cause since I regularly scan using Trend Micro Internet Security Pro, Spybot - S&D, & AdAware and nothing has ever been found. After struggling to get some different scanners installed (Malwarebytes and HijackThis really gave me a problem), I am unable to get Malwarebytes or some of the online scanners (I tried OneCare) to complete a full scan. They keep freezing on a file C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-ie-feeds-platform_31bf3856ad364e35_8.0.6001.22973_none_43109c2d69974eda\msfeeds.dll or something very similar (it is usually abbreviated or cut off when it freezes and I am unable to get the entire path. I am also unable to browse out to some AV/malware sites intermittently (possibly only able to in safe mode.) I also tried running Malwarebytes off a removable drive and they also locked up on that same file, and now that drive appears to have been corrupted and I can't access anything on it. I finally got a HJT log while in Safe Mode:Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 3:48:26 AM, on 3/5/2010Platform: Windows Vista SP2 (WinNT 6.00.1906)MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.6001.18882)Boot mode: Safe mode with network supportRunning processes:C:\Windows\Explorer.EXEC:\Windows\helppane.exeC:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmpnscfg.exeC:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exeC:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exeR1 - I can't seem to find any virus/malware descriptions online that match what I'm experiencing. Dell tells me it most likely was related to the bad windows update because there was a serious Microsoft vulnerabilty around the time I began having the problem and it was something they were familiar with, but they won't tell me anything more to point me in the right direction.Thanks.Mike
