Malware.trace & Backdoor.bot removal help

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

Basically a family member recently asked me to look at her computer because she was having trouble accessing the internet. I took the computer, checked it and IE (an older version, like most things she isn't in the habbit of updating anything which is probably why she has the problem in the first place) wouldn't load up, so i ran Malwarebytes and another program and found quite alot of problems, thankfully most of them were easy to remove thanks to Malwarebytes. I say most because the problems i listed in the topic title persist, even after deleting them, they seem to re-appear after the reboot.

I'd really appreciate it if someone could help out, thanks.

Very good! B)

Step 1:

Please uninstall the following application:

Adobe Reader 7.0.8

After finish our work, please download and install the latest version of Adobe Reader from:

http://www.adobe.com

Step 2:

I also see you have Viewpoint installed...

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player

Step 3:

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply
    Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.
    C:\Program Files\Java
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java
    C:\Windows\Sun
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

Step 4:

I see you are running Teatimer.

I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.

When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.

If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions.

After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.exe to your desktop.

Then run ResetTeaTimer.exe.

This will only take a few seconds.

Step 5:

Please visit Combofix Guide & Instructions for instructions for installing the recovery console and downloading and running ComboFix.

The only thing different from the instructions there is that when downloading and saving the ComboFix.exe I would like you to rename it to Combo-Fix.exe please.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that along with a new HijackThis log.

Important notes regarding ComboFix:

ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser. This can easily be changed once we're finished.

ComboFix also prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you, please let me know. This can be undone manually when we're finished. Read HERE for an article written by dvk01 on why we disable autoruns.

Note: During this process, it would help a great deal and be very much appreciated if you would refrain from installing any new software or hardware on this machine, unless absolutely necessary, until the clean up process is finished as it makes our job more tedious, with additional new files that may have to be researched, which is very time consuming.

Also, please do not run any security programs or fixes on your own as doing so may compromise what we will be doing. It is important that you wait for instructions.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

* JavaRa log

* HijackThis log (new)

* ComboFix log

hi!

I assume i need to be on the "infected" computer while submiting these paths? If so that is going to be a problem as i havent been able to access IE on the "infected" machine and still can't. I've been using another computer to post the results thus far.

Anyway, let's do it:

Open Notepad and copy and paste the text in the code box below into it:

KillAll::

Folder::
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\b703d4f
c:\documents and settings\Jake\Application Data\Gram Hold Beep
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\Mfcd upload army browse
c:\documents and settings\Tracey\Application Data\Gram Hold Beep

MBR::

Save the file to your desktop and name it CFScript.txt

Then drag the CFScript.txt into the ComboFix.exe as shown in the screenshot below.

CFScriptB-4.gif

This will start ComboFix again. It may ask to reboot. Post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Note: These instructions and script were created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these instructions or use this script as it could damage the workings of your system.

Delete your copy of ComboFix and ComboFix folder (in your main hard drive). Then:

Ah, so if i can get the cd from her, i should be able to fix this without losing anything on the computer?

Also, what if i try to do a system restore?, i can access it through task manager, but the only available date is back to a date when the computer was fully infected

Absolutely yes!

Here are details on the repair of Windows:

http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/How-to-repa...ws-XP-t138.html

Windows XP repair feature won't delete your data, installed programs, personal information, or settings. It just repairs the operating system!
Note: The system repair function will remove any updates you have previously installed that are not included on the CD. Drivers will also be reverted to their original XP versions, as well as some settings (network & performance settings may sometimes be reset to their defaults). It may be necessary to reactivate your Windows XP as well. When finished, you will have to download all of the updates from Microsoft Windows Update, because they are all replaced during repair.

You should not use System Restore, because as you said, it will return the time when your system was seriously infected and have to start all over again. There is no need to use System Restore.
