I am desktop support for my company. I am now on the third computer that has been brought to me with malware in the past two weeks. I believe it is the same infection, but I don't think they have gotten it from the same source. Malware bytes cleans the computer except for one registry setting that keeps coming back after a restart. It is

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ProcObsrv (Rogue.NetCom3)

SDfix did not find this problem. A full scan with symantec endpoint protection doesn't come up with anything. Is this registry entry anything to worry about?

Here is a hijak this log if it helps.

When browsing the registry folder

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ProcObsrv

I noticed one of the keys pointed to c:\program files\asset services management\procobsrv.sys. This is part of Dell's asset management service, eSmart. We have group policy to apply that to all the computers. I'm beginning to suspect that this keeps reappearing because group policy keeps reloading it (I notice after removal and restart it pauses at applying computer settings which usually means applying group policy), and that this is not part of the virus at all.

I will install Malware bytes on my machine (known NOT infected machine), and report back if it finds it as malware.

I've got this same issue at my office. Currently, it appears that the ProcObsrv.sys file is either an orphaned entry in the registry (possibly from the installation process) or it gets moved and the registry reference is no longer needed (or nobody at ASAP bothered to update it). Our major concern is if it continues to be a necessary registry entry, whether or not it is breaking esmart's inventory capability. I'm waiting to hear back from esmart support - I will keep you posted with any updates I get.

The official word from Dell is that ProcObsrv is indeed one of their files. Can we please have someone remove this as a false-positive? Dell said that deleting the key shouldn't affect eSMART's daily polling, however after running a test battery, they were unable to see a few in their regular updates.
